Can a Muslim Woman Travel From London to Morocco Without a Mahram?

02 January, 2022
Q I want to travel to Morocco from London but do not have a mahram to travel with me. My husband cannot go and said as long as I have a mahram I can go but I will not be travelling for more than 3 hours by plane and my father will meet me at the airport. We are both confused with the 48km rule/three days travelling as the distance is more than 48km but less than 3 days.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

A Muslim woman can travel from London to Morocco by herself without a mahram since the Prophet’s ban on a woman’s travel without a mahram was because of his concern for her safety.

In responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

I do not see any issue with your travel from London to Morocco by yourself without a mahram since the Prophet’s ban on a woman’s travel without a mahram was because of his concern for her safety.

Today travel in a plane which is comparatively safe as compared to travel in the desert that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was talking about.

That this was one of the main concerns of the Prophet is clear from the following statement he made in Makkah during the early years his concern when he said even during the early years of his struggle in Makkah: “I will continue this struggle until a woman can travel all alone without fear for her safety.”

Later in Madinah, he also told Adiyy b. Hatim, “Adi, if you were to live long, you would see that woman will be able to travel across (the desert) all by herself from Hira to Haram without any fear from anyone except for wolves preying on her sheep!” (Al-Bukhari

It is clear from the above that the Prophet’s ban on a woman’s travel without a mahram was basically because of his concern over her safety. Today airlines are relatively safe. So, I do not see any issue with your travel from London to Morocco.

Almighty Allah knows best.
