Are Ear Piercings Haram in Islam?

28 November, 2023
Q As-salamu `alaykum. My twelve-year-old daughter had her ear lobes pierced when she was younger. Now that she is twelve, she wants to have one more hole (piercing) in the upper part of her ear on one side only. My question is: is it allowed to pierce the ears to wear earrings? If yes, is there a limit to the amount of piercings one may have in one's ears?

Answer

Wa `alaykum as-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Piercing ears for women is permissible as there is no evidence in the Shariah to prohibit it.

Answering your question, Sheikh Kifah Mustapha, the Imam and Director of The Prayer Center of Orland Park and representative for Dar El Fatwa of Lebanon in the US, states:

The general rule in Islam is that; all matters are permissible unless there is an authentic text that says it is impermissible (haram). In this case, it was authenticated in Sahih Al-Bukhari that the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) to be like Umm Zar` who pierced her ear.

With that in mind and that no prohibition came to the number of piercing ear, it should be lawful to pierce ear twice or more.

Allah Almighty knows best.
