Is Yoga Haram for Muslims?

07 October, 2024
Q Yoga is believed to be one of the best ways to keep yourself physically and mentally healthy. Is it permissible to practice yoga in Islam?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

  • If you are practicing yoga which has roots in theology of another religion, then it is better to avoid it.
  • But if you are doing yoga as a form of exercise like Pilates, without being attached to the in-depth concepts of the practice of yoga, then it is permissible, there’s nothing wrong in that

Imam Yahya Ibrahim, Head of Islamic Studies and Assistant Principal at Langford Islamic College, Australia, answers your question in this short video;

Almighty Allah knows best.
