Q
When two people are praying together, where should the imam be standing and where should the follower stand? A common practice is for the follower to be a little behind the imam. Is this correct?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

In this fatwa:
The person praying with the imam the (ma’umum of follower) should be on the right side of the imam (the prayer leader), and exactly on his side, not a step back.
