Is Use of TV Monitor in Women’s Prayer Spaces Permissible?

30 August, 2021
Q Is it permissible to place a TV monitor in the women's prayer place displaying the Imam as if he was in front of them so as for their prayer to be accurate; especially, during silent prayer?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

As keeping track of the Imam‘s movements in prayer is among the conditions for the validity of following him, the TV monitor, which is to be placed in the women‘s prayer place, serves that end.

Answering your question, the General Iftaa’ Department in Jordan, states the following:

In order for following the Imam to be valid, it is conditioned that prayer performers, be they inside or outside the mosque, are aware of the Imam’s movements through hearing his takbeer, seeing him or seeing those praying behind him.

Al-Imam An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “In order for following the Imam to be valid, it is conditioned that those led in prayer are aware of his movements, whether all were in a mosque or any other place of prayer, as agreed by Shafi`i scholars.

Moreover, fellow Shafi`i scholars said: “This can be achieved through hearing the Imam or those praying behind him or seeing their movement. They have also agreed on the permissibility of relying on any of these acts.” (Al-Majmou`, 4/201)

As keeping track of the Imam‘s movements in prayer is among the conditions for the validity of following him, the TV monitor, which is to be placed in the women‘s prayer place, serves that end. Therefore, it could play an important role; particularly, when the Imam performs the sujud of Quranic recital or Sujud As-Sahw (Forgetfulness prostration) since those who could only hear him may think that he made the takbeer for moving from standing up to bowing.

In conclusion, the TV monitor is a means of keeping up with the movements of the Imam and does not violate the Shari`ah since it merely displays him. However, it is preferable that praying people do not busy themselves with it, save for a valid need, in order not to be distracted from their prayer or lose concentration.

 Almighty Allah knows best.
