Is Believing in Lucky Numbers Allowed?

30 December, 2022
Q As-salmu `alaykum. Is it haram to believe that 3, 7 and 9 are lucky numbers? Jazaka Allah khyran.

Answer

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

In fact, there is no backing in the sources of the Shari`ah for what is called “lucky numbers”. So, this notion is alien to Islam and its values.

Responding to your question, Dr. Wael Shihab, PhD in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University, and currently the Imam of the Downtown Toronto Masjid in Canada, stated,

Issues of belief or `aqeedah have to be based on the directions of Revelation, i.e., the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

There is nothing in the sources, the Qur’an or the Sunnah, or in the practice of the early Muslims and leading scholars to indicate that the specific numbers referred to in the question are lucky. It is, therefore, a groundless notion to believe in their luckiness.

A Muslim should never rely on such odd ideas to look for any worldly gain. He should rather spare no efforts and take necessary measures to achieve his legal goals.

May Allah accept your and our good deeds!

Allah Almighty knows best.
