Is There Anyone in Hell Now?

13 February, 2024
Q During the night journey of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), he saw some people being punished in the hellfire. How should we understand these hadiths?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

1- Al-Isra and Al-Miraj, the Ascension and Night Journey of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Jerusalem is from the matters of the Unseen (ghayb).

2- Some scholars view that Prophet Muhammad was shown the future when he saw people burning in the Hellfire.

3- It could be that the Prophet saw the souls of those who are already condemned, but the reality of that is known only to Allah the Almighty.
