In Love at 18 and 16: Should We Marry?

24 November, 2019
Q As-salamu `alaykum. I am in love with a girl. I will be 18 in December and she is 16. She also loves me. We cannot stay away from each other. Can we marry now according to Islam and laws of Pakistan? How can we get permission of our parents? Is there any problem of age?

Answer

Wa `alaykum as-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

1- Though it is allowed for any Muslim, male or female, to marry once he/she reaches the age of puberty, you should avoid thinking of marriage at this young age till you both are able to manage a house.

2- Managing a house is a big responsibility for which you should be qualified. So, you should excuse your parents if they rejected your marriage at this age.

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

I cannot say that there is a juristic objection. However, as a father, grandfather and above all as an imam serving the Muslim community for over four decades, I urge you not to think of marriage right now at this young age.

Rather, you should wait until such time that both of you are mature adults and have the ability to support a family.

It is also important for anyone getting married to legalize the marriage in conformity with the requirements of the country. So, if you are in Pakistan, I would urge you to check with the marriage registration office in your district.

I pray for you to choose wisely.

Allah Almighty knows best.
