Q Becoming an organ donor has become a common trend. Is organ donation permissible in Islam? What are the aspects that need to be taken into consideration?

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. 

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

  1. Organs can be donated if you are giving them to someone who needs them and not for the sake of research. Therefore, organ donation is permissible in Islam if it is going to save the life of another person. There should be a permission from the dead person before he died or from his family or relatives. 
  2. Bodies should be preserved as much as possible, including corpses. Prophet Muhammad said: “Breaking the bones of a corpus is just as sinful as breaking the bones of a living person.”
