Is Blood Donation Permissible from Muslim to Non-Muslim Permissible?

24 August, 2022
Q As-salamu `alaykum! Is it permissible in Islam to donate blood to non-Muslims?

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

  • Islam carries for humanity all goodness and welfare. Islam urges Muslims to keep good relations with and be generous to all peoples.
  • Therefore, blood donation to non-Muslims is permissible.

In his response to the question, Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi, Former President of the Islamic Society of North America, states:

Blood transfusion for medical purposes is permissible in Islam. It is permissible to take blood from a non-Muslim and it is permissible to give blood to non-Muslims.

These matters are related to human life.

It stands to reason that Islam teaches us to feed the hungry, to take care of the sick and to save the life of people.

We read in the Quran what means:

{Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.} (Al-Ma’idah 5:32)

In these matters, it does not make any difference between the life of a Muslim and non-Muslim.

 Allah Almighty knows best.
