Is Birth Control Allowed in Islam?

09 November, 2022
Q Birth control is a common practice. Is it permissible in Islam? Are there any conditions for using birth control? Has the Prophet (peace be upon him) said anything about this?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Birth control in Islam is allowed with the following conditions:

  • The method of birth control itself is safe, and approved with doctor.
  • This method is pure.
  • The method is used with the consent of both husband and wife.
  • The method is not permanent in nature, unless the reason for use is due to health.
