Mother Has to Wear Pampers: Should She Go for Hajj?

01 June, 2023
Q My mother is sick. She had a stroke which has many effects on her. Two of these are very important: 1. Her memory is affected greatly she has forgotten the surahs of Quran, prayer and duas 2. She is unable to hold her urine and stool. This condition is not permanent. Some days she is fine but other days she is not. She must use the pampers for elderly people. Like every Muslim she has deep desire to go for Hajj. In her condition as described above is it advisable for her to go for Hajj or not. Please answer in the light of Quran and Sunnah of Prophet (peace be upon him).

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

If your mother’s physician sees no problem with her traveling in her condition, then you should facilitate it for her. If her health challenges do not allow her to undertake such a long journey, then you may send someone who has already performed hajj to do it on her behalf.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

Hajj is obligatory upon those who are physically and financially able to do so.  Allah says,”…. Hence, pilgrimage unto the House (of Allah) is a duty owed to Allah by all people who can undertake it. And as for those who deny the truth – verily, Allah does not stand in need of anything in all the worlds.” (Aal Imran: 3:97)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O people! Hajj is enjoined upon you as a duty; so you must do it.”

So if your mother can do hajj, she should do it, even if she is suffering from some of the medical challenges you have indicated–so long as she can travel. Perhaps because of her ardent desire to perform hajj and her prayers may have a positive and beneficial effect on her condition; for miracles do happen in hajj as the prayers of a guest of Allah may be more likely to be heard than those of others. Furthermore, the benefits of hajj are incalculable. The Prophet said, “A virtuous hajj entails no other reward than paradise.”

Therefore, if your mother has the desire to perform hajj, and she finds herself confident, then you are advised to seek the advice of her physician and ask him or her about her health condition. If her physician sees no problem with her traveling in her condition, then you should facilitate it for her.

If, on the contrary, her health challenges do not allow her to undertake such a long journey, then you may send someone who has already performed hajj to do it on her behalf.

Almighty Allah knows best.
