Can You Make Hajj with University Grant?

08 June, 2023
Q I wish to perform hajj this year. I have worked previously and most of the money earned from my job I will use to pay for my hajj. Because I am a student, I attain a grant from university (one which I do not pay back), therefore can this be used towards my hajj?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

You are allowed to perform hajj with the money you have saved even though a portion of it may be coming from the university grant you received.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

If you owe government money for a student loan you ought to pay it back first before thinking of performing hajj. Hajj is fardh on you until you pay back the loan. If, however, you did not take a loan; rather you received a grant, then you are allowed to perform hajj with money you have saved, even though a portion of it may be coming from the grant you received.

Almighty Allah knows best.
