Can You Go to Hajj If You Have a Debt or a Loan? (Video)

18 June, 2022
Q Is it permissible for you to do Hajj whilst you have loans mortgages or people money?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

  1. Debts should not stop someone from going to Hajj. You first need to make a clear distinction between halal and haram mortgage. There are many mortgages that are haram and you end up paying interest on them.
  2. According to vast majority of the scholars, being in haram loan doesn’t invalidate Hajj. If the person you owe money to knows you are going for Hajj and gives you the permission you can.
  3. Although it is important to remember short term loans should be given priority to be paid back when compared to long term loans especially those with the banks.
