In this fatwa:
Menstruating women are best advised to respect the sanctity of Ramadan by choosing to eat and drink discreetly rather than making a public display of it.
Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:
Menstruating women are best advised to respect the sanctity of Ramadan by choosing to eat and drink discreetly rather than making a public display of it.
Having said this, I must state that there is nothing wrong with menstruating women eating and drinking while you are not fasting because of reasons that are valid in the Shari`ah. We know from the authentic sources of Islam that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to eat and drink while traveling. Likewise, his companions also partook in food and drink if they skipped the fast because of travel or sickness.
Therefore, there is no need for menstruating women to deprive themselves of food and drink if they cannot fast.
Almighty Allah knows best.
