Can You Skip Fasting Due to Long Work Hours?

14 March, 2025
Q As-salamu `alaykum. I work at site at Mackay, for 12 hours a day for 8 days and get 6 days off. During Ramadan at site, fasting is from 03:00 to 22:30. Some Muslim brothers at the site are of the opinion that fasting cannot be more than 18 hours. What is its validity? How can we manage the day in Ramadan? I work from 06:00 to18:00 at the site. `Asr is around 19:00, Magrib is around 22:25, `Isha’ is at 23:35, Tarawih at 23:50 to 01:00. Your early guidance requested.

Answer

Wa `alaykum as-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

If fasting leads to severe dehydration due to long work hours, Islamic scholars allow workers in physically demanding jobs to skip the fast and make it up later. This ruling applies to those who face extreme conditions that impact their health while fasting.

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

If you are working at a hard job and you are not able to function due to dehydration because of the prolonged hours of fasting, you are allowed to skip the fast, and make up during winter when the day hours are shorter.

Eminent scholars have ruled that people doing manual jobs or working in extreme conditions and they face the risk of dehydration, they may skip fasting and make up for it later.

Allah Almighty knows best.
