Can You Delay Iftar?

26 March, 2024
Q What does our sunnah say about the timing of iftar? Can you delay iftar because you are serving others or you are busy making dua before breaking fast?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

  • The sunnah is to hasten to break your fast the moment you hear the adhan for Maghrib. The Companion used to be among the first to break their fast and it comes to sahur,  they will delay it all the way near the adhan of Fajr.
  • If you are serving people, break your fast then continue serving them. If you want to make dua at the time of iftar, break your fast first.
