10 April, 2023
Q As-Salamu `alaykum. Is it permissible for someone to break their fast in order to study for exams?

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu waRahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

1- Studying for exams in Ramadan isn’t a valid excuse for a student to break fast.

2- However, if you experiences extreme hardship during daytime, then you may break the fast, due to necessity.

Answering your question, the General Iftaa’ Department in Jordan, states:

Fasting is a pillar of Islam that Allah has prescribed to all Muslims. Allah says in this regard what means:

{O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint.} (Al-Baqarah 2:183)

The Noble Quran has clearly stated the excuses which allow someone to break their fast in Ramadan:

{(Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (with hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that you fast, if you only knew.} (Al-Baqarah 2:184)

In conclusion, studying for exams in Ramadan isn’t a valid excuse for a student to break the fast. It is imperative that he/she starts their fast and do their best studying for exams. However, upon experiencing extreme hardship during daytime, then he may break the fast. We pray that Allah, the Exalted, grants success to all students.

Allah Almighty knows best.
