Not Just a Packet of Cereal

06 January, 2024
Q As salamu 'alaykum My daughter is in her 3rd grade. The teachers in the lower grades held "The Great Cereal Box Contest". All of the students did a great job designing their own cereal. This is what my daughter did: "Loving Allah and Raising My Kids" This makes a wonderful art project for homeschooling. It could be appropriate for a wide variety of ages too.

Answer

In this counseling answer:

“The child can choose what grain their cereal is made from and learn about where for instance ‘corn’ is grown, how it is grown, the right climate for growth, how Allah (SWT), provides the conditions for growth and the different foods that are made from corn. They could even learn about the difference between natural corn and genetically modified corn, how and why the corn that Allah (SWT) provides for us is better.”

As salamu ‘alaykum dear sister,

Jazkaka Allahu Khayran for sharing with us your joyful experiences with your daughter. Lots of educational fun can be had with your daughter’s design. Your daughter’s design speaks much of the tarbia with which you have raised her, and may this be an inspiration for other parents, in sha ‘Allah.

In fact, if there was a cereal that had shapes in the form of Arabic letters, one wonders how much would actually get eaten! Al hamdu lillah, the teachers at her school were able to appreciate and recognize your daughter’s talent.

Going back to the design on the box, one could have fun learning about colors, shapes, English letters, Arabic letters and numbers. For instance:

-One could learn to identify the names of the letters

-As the letters are in different colors, one could learn colors or/and learn to identify the colors by the letters

-One could use the letters to make other words

-One could count how many letters or groups of letters there are in the breakfast bowl.

-The child can choose what grain their cereal is made from and learn about where for instance ‘corn’ is grown, how it is grown, the right climate for growth, how Allah (SWT), provides the conditions for growth and the different foods that are made from corn. They could even learn about the difference between natural corn and genetically modified corn, how and why the corn that Allah (SWT) provides for us is better.

As for your parents blog, it is very encouraging to see the ways in which parents take their children’s Islamic education seriously, and as a teacher who obviously enjoys the two essential keys of the learning process, a) children and b) teaching. Hands up to you and your husband for your dedication; and we look forward to receiving some homeshooling ideas from you that could be shared with other parents.
