Answer
As salamu `alaykum,
Although Islam does not oblige parents to choose specific names whether Islamic or non-Islamic, names are reflections of one’s belief, ethics and personality, they also represent the values that you want your son to adopt and fulfill in life. It is reported that Prophet Mohammad (saw) said:
“You will be called on the Day of Resurrection by your names and the names of your fathers, so have good names” ( Abu Dawud 41# 4930 ).
-To have a good name, certain rules need to be fulfilled:
-It should not indicate (from any aspect) any trace of shirk, or association of partners with Allah.
-To attract hate or shame to the child and people around him, like names that indicate mockery, evil, oppression or self-worthlessness.
-Muslims are also forbidden to name their children after the attributes of Allah, such as “Ar-Rahman (the Gracious), Al-Khaliq (the Creator), etc.
-It is recommended to call children after the Prophets and righteous people, to keep them in memory, and follow their footsteps.
-It is also recommended to call your children names indicating humility and servitude to Allah, in this regard The Prophet said:
“The best names in Allah’s Sight are `Abdullah and `Abdur-Rahman” ( Muslim 25: 5315 )
Bearing these rules in mind we Muslims can choose any names that do not compromise our Islamic identity.
Pertaining the name of your son, you have chosen to call him Ushey also written as Yusha’ , which is a Hebrew variant of Joshua, Yeshua, and Oshea which means “God is my salvation.” and Yusha’ bin Nun is known as Jashua in the Torah
Although the name Yusha` is not mentioned frankly in the Holy Qur`an yet some of the exegetes (Mufassir) of the Qur’an said Yusha’ bin Nun was the servant of prophet Musa who accompanied him in his travel to meet Al Khidr as mentioned in Surat Al Kahf ( The Cave).
“And when Musa said to his servant: I will not cease until I reach the junction of the two rivers or I will go on for years ” (Al- Kahf 18:60)
“But when they had gone farther, he said to his servant: Bring to us our morning meal, certainly we have met with fatigue from this our journey. He said: Did you see when we took refuge on the rock then I forgot the fish, and nothing made me forget to speak of it but the Shaytan, and it took its way into the river; what a wonder ” (Al- Kahf 18 : 62 & 63)
And in the following ahadith:
“Prophet Muhammad said, ‘Once Moses stood up and addressed Bani Israel. He was asked who was the most learned man amongst the people. He said, ‘I.’ Allah admonished him as he did not attribute absolute knowledge to Him (Allah). So, Allah said to him, ‘Yes, at the junction of the two seas there is a Slave of Mine who is more learned than you.’ Moses said, ‘O my Lord! How can I meet him?’ Allah said, ‘Take a fish and put it in a large basket and you will find him at the place where you will lose the fish.’ Moses took a fish and put it in a basket and proceeded along with his (servant) boy, Yusha ‘bin Nun, till they reached the rock where they laid their heads (i.e. lay down). Moses slept, and the fish, moving out of the basket, fell into the sea. (Bukhari 4: 55 #613 )
Only you can decide what is the best of names for the child, who will grow and live by this name, so seek further guidance.
All my du`aa’ for you and your son that Allah would accept him with the pious and righteous as He accepted Musa and his servant.
And finally – Any good is from Allah and any mistakes are from myself.
