In seeking to answer your question, I have been able to find one hundred and fifty six different translations of the Bible into English. Now, if we are going to take our knowledge about Jesus from the Bible, we must first of all decide which Bible to take it from, for these one hundred and fifty six translations often differ to a great degree in what they say.
Let me give an example of what I mean. If I was to translate the French words “je t’aime” into English, I could either translate the words as “ I love you” or “I like you.” Now, in English, these two verbs are very different and have different meanings, but in French the one verb will suffice.
If it is difficult to translate accurately three words from French, then imagine how difficult it must be to translate the words of the Creator speaking to His Creation.
All Bible scholars will agree that the books of the Bible were not written by one person, and the vast majority will agree that they were not dictated, verbatim, by one person. In other words, Biblical scholars will suggest that the words of the Bible, whilst not the exact words of God, are a reflection of what He said, as mediated by different human beings and through many translations.
With respect to what others believe, for Muslims this creates a problem. How are we to rely on the words written down, if they differ so greatly from one translation to the next and if even the scholars who study them do not say that they are the exact words of God?
“Because the Bible says so” is not a satisfactory answer, since what people really mean is “because Luke says so” or because “Mark says so.” In significant areas, Luke and Mark differ on what they have to say about Jesus (peace and blessing be upon him – PBUH).
In the Gospel, accounts of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, for example, the Gospel writers differ greatly on who was inside the empty tomb. Mark talks about “a young man,”. Matthew calls him “an angel”. Luke says that there were “two men”. And John describes “two angels in white”. Now, who exactly was inside the tomb? And how can we rely on these four accounts to tell us accurately about Jesus if they differ so greatly on small details?
The Quran, however, leaves us in no doubt. Muslim scholars have consistently taught that the Quran is the divinely revealed Word of God, and that it has remained unchanged since it was revealed over fourteen centuries ago.
Any Quran from any century since then and from any different part of the world will be the exact same as any other copy. The fact that we have five surviving copies of the first Quran to be written down (one in Cairo, one in Tashkent, one in Sanaa, and two in Istanbul) is further evidence that the is Quran reliable.
In the Quran, there are eleven chapters in which Allah Almighty speaks about Prophet Jesus (PBUH). Some of them refer to him as Jesus, whilst others call him “Al Maseeh” or the Messiah.
In all verses of the Quran, there is no doubt about who Jesus is. He is not God or like God.
{Lo! The likeness of Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, and then He said unto him: Be! And he is!} (Quran 3:59)
