Polygamy for Many Prophets: What About Jesus?

18 December, 2016
Q You have described a lot about Polygamy, its moral ramifications and ethical repercussions and that Abraham, Isaac, Jacob including King Solomon had many wives. You also culturally justified it and indirectly linked the custom to Christianity. But never once mentioned Nabi Essa (Jesus Christ) and his practices?!

If your question is specifically about his connection to polygamy or marriage in general, then the Noble Quran and blessed sunnah of the Prophet do not really tackle this issue, prove, or disprove the marriage of Prophet Jesus (PBUH).

As a matter of principle, Allah Almighty informs us of what will be of benefit to us in our deen (religion) and dunya (worldly life). He informs us of what would be of benefit to us in this life and the next.

What is left out is usually information or matters that will not increase or our iman (faith), knowledge, spirituality, or relationship with Our Creator. Notice for instance in Surat Al Kahf (chapter 18 of the Quran), we were informed of how people differed and debated the number of youths that were in the cave.

Allah Almighty narrated their debate, then mentioned that He is most knowing of their number, and moves on to explain why they were role models worthy of mentioning and learning from.

Key point: we learn that arguing about certain issues might not be beneficial, rather we ought to care about the messages/wisdom/lessons that could benefit us in the matters of life and religion.

Back to your question, we cannot fully prove or disprove this particulate matter with regard to Jesus (PBUH). But, this doesn’t really negate how noble and elevated in the sight of Allah he is, and the many lessons we can still learn from him.

Each messenger comes with a message and lessons to deliver to us. They have different circumstances and life experiences, all part of their journey and the lessons they’re meant to teach people. Ultimately, they all call for the remembrance and worship of the One Creator, and the day when we will all go back to Him.

In the Quran, Allah gives us the essential message of Jesus (PBUH):

{[Jesus] said, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.

And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive.

And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant.

And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive.”

That is Jesus, the son of Mary – the word of truth about which they are in dispute.

It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.

[Jesus said], “And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.”} (Surah Maryam 19:30-36)

May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you.
