Answer
Short Answer: Sister, self-awareness is important if one wishes to stay grounded in reality. That is why I suggest that you ask yourself some serious questions: Why do I want more success than everyone else in the world? Why is it important that I be the only one having this privilege? Is it because it will make me feel better about myself? Why is it that I do not want someone else to have as much success as I do?
………….
Asalaamu alaykum, and thank you for sending in your question to our website.
First of all, sister, it is praiseworthy that you worry about the correctness of your supplications. Our belief that Allah provides for all of us creation should pervade our lives. So whenever we ask Him for something, we should ponder. Is it something that will benefit us only in this worldly life? Or are we asking Him for something that will also let us attain eternal success in the Hereafter?
The Quest for Success
“Ask, therefore, God [to give you] out of His bounty: behold, God has indeed full knowledge of everything.” [4:32]
Dua for Success Mentioned in Quran
In the Quran, Allah has provided us with a beautiful dua. By supplicating to Him with this dua, we can ask Him for success:
“But there are among them such as pray, “O our Sustainer! Grant us good in this world and good in the life to come, and keep us safe from suffering through the fire” [Quran 2:201]
The Muslim does not focus just on the success of this world. Rather, for a believer, true success is that of the life of the Hereafter. In lieu of which, they will also receive worldly blessings as a harbinger of their future destination.
Prophet Dawud’s Dua
Sister, self-awareness is important if one wishes to stay grounded in reality. That is why I suggest that you ask yourself some serious questions:
Why do I want more success than everyone else in the world? Why is it important that I be the only one having this privilege? Is it because it will make me feel better about myself? Why is it that I do not want someone else to have as much success as I do?
A dua made by Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him) is quoted in the Quran:
“He prayed: O my Sustainer! Forgive me my sins, and bestow upon me the gift of a kingdom which may not suit anyone after me: verily, You alone are a giver of gifts!” [38:35]
Allah granted him his dua. He became a valiant ruler and king. He was blessed with immense dominion and power upon earth. However, this also increased his responsibility of conveying Allah’s message.
So you see, sister, the truth is that great blessings do not come without a price. The greater a blessing, the greater is the weight of its responsibility. The believer will have to answer to Allah about discharging it and using it correctly. Their accountability will therefore increase on the Day of Reckoning.
Conclusion: Stick Close to Scriptural Dua’s
In the end, I would like to remind you to turn to scripture. There are many lovely dua’s in the Quran and Prophetic sayings (hadith). These are truly beautiful dua’s, which let us ask Allah for every possible blessing that is worth having. I urge you to memorize their words as well as meanings. And make these supplications on a daily basis, whenever you are free.
And Allah knows best.
I hope this helps.
Salam and please keep in touch.
