Answer
Asalamu Alaikum Yasmina,
Thank you so much for your valuable trust, and we do hope to help you the best that we can.
What you are asking is not such a simple question to be answered with either “Yes” or “No.” At a first glance, however, the answer seems to be quite simply that one cannot disobey Allah’s orders or overlook them in certain circumstances.
So, let us discuss your question in a reasonable way, but let me ask you some questions first:
1- Why did you wear hijab in the first place?
2- What is your goal when thinking of not wearing hijab?
3- Do you really believe that your life is going to be happy when being unveiled?
First of all, I believe that the verse in the Quran has made the issue of hijab clear:
{And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms.} (Quran 24:31)
This is why Muslim women should wear hijab, thus the question is: did you wear your hijab because of a religious thinking? If so, why are you thinking of taking it off now?
Have you worn it to please someone other than Allah from the start? If so, do you wish to take it off in order to displease that person? If so, are these good intentions?
You need to think, dear Yasmina, that by wearing your hijab to seek nearness to and the pleasure of Allah alone you are doing great things that you have to be proud of:
- You are obeying Allah’s orders. He has established for the woman what suits her nature, gives her full security, and more dignity.
- You are not like any other girl. Your status in Islam is something unique, something novel, and something that has no similarity in any other faith.
- With your hijab, you are marching in steady steps in the path of dawah (invitation to Islam) in a non-Muslim community. You are capable of giving people an ideal perspective of the handsome, clean, organized, fashionable, and respectful nature of Islam and Muslims. With the correct intention, every moment of your life could easily be counted as the priceless time “in the path of Allah.”
So, if you think of wearing hijab for these reasons does it make it easier?
You still can wear what you like to wear as long as it complies with Allah’s orders. Allah simply orders that your clothing be loose, non-flashy, and that it covers the areas of your body that are considered your `awra (nakedness).
The rules are simple and give a lot of leeway. Allah wants to facilitate our lives in a way that will cause us no harm.
Finally, I’d like to pass on some simple words, hoping that they’ll help. The Prophet (PBUH) said:
Nothing befalls a believer, a (prick of a) thorn or more than that, but Allah will raise him one degree in status thereby, or erase a bad deed. (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).
Thus, my final advice is to keep walking in Allah’s path, because your life, for sure, will be full of goodness and you will earn a high status with Allah.
May Allah bless you. I hope this helps address your concern.
Salam and please keep in touch.
