In this fatwa:
If you are making dresses that are not considered vulgar – including wedding collections- there is nothing wrong with it.
In responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:
If you are making dresses that are not considered vulgar – including wedding collections– there is nothing wrong with it. It is like making any other things, which may be used in a right way or wrong way.
A person can choose to use a pen to write a good article or communicate the truth; while another may decide to write an obscene novel or poem using the same pen.
The responsibility lies on the user and not on the one who makes or sells the pen. You can apply this to all types of media or objects that can be used for good or bad.
So, ask yourself the question: Is this a dress that can be used for a good purpose or not? If it can be, you may choose to pursue the career; otherwise, you should leave it and go for something else.
Islam teaches us that when Allah prohibits something, He has already created something halal as a substitute for us to choose.
Almighty Allah knows best.
