Linguistically Zakat comes from that which is to grow or increase as a means of purification. The technical meaning of Zakat is an obligatory amount that is taken from one’s surplus wealth once it reaches a certain threshold.
When we look into the Quran we see there are different categories of zakat. There are 4 of these categories. The first is gold and silver, which is our money today. Secondly, the agricultural output, from crops and yields. Thirdly, from business inventory, if you are a seller of products and you want to exchange that for money then zakat is due on that. Fourthly, livestock, cows, camels, goats and sheep.
May Allah make us from those that give our zakat!
