Why do we pray for enemies? As many psychologist have explained, forgiving is very important for our mental health.
Regularly the media are showing Islam as a violent religion.
In fact, Muslims are asked to forgive, rather than taking revenge. So are there really verses in the Quran calling on us to forgive our enemies?
The answer is yes, and more than one. Here are some:
“Hold to forgiveness, command what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.” (Surah 7:199)
“And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation – his reward is [due] from Allah . Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.” (Surah 42:40)
“[…]let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (Surah 24:22)
In this lecture, Mufti Menk is pushing people to reflect on how little we forgive these days. Especially when we see enemies in the people around us (families).
Islam teaches us to love for others what we love for ourselves. Based on that Mufti Menk explains how asking for revenge will harden our hearts and divise us.
He invites us to think about how the Prophet (pbuh) used to supplicate and pray to Allah to guide his enemies. Indeed he wanted Islam to reach their hearts.
Considering that the worst enemies of Islam have become its fiercest defendants through the ages, it makes sense.
Therefore, Muslims should ask Allah to forgive and guide the people who are harming them.
May Allah give us patience and keep us in the right path, ameen.
