How Small Are You to the Universe?

{Do you not know that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth – the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates – for him there is none that can bestow honour on him. Indeed, Allah does what He wills.} [Surat Al-Hajj 22:18].

Indeed, Allah’s universe is full of signs. In this TED video Alex Hofeldt helps us understand the scale of these wondrous signs for you to see how much you weigh in the cosmos.

In 1995, scientists pointed the Hubble Telescope at an area of the sky near the Big Dipper. The location was apparently empty, and the whole endeavor was risky.

What, if anything, was going to show up? But what came back was nothing short of spectacular; an image of over 1,500 galaxies glimmering in a tiny sliver of the universe.

Famous physicist Stephen Hawking wrote, “Our Solar System is certainly a prerequisite for our existence . . . . but there does not seem to be a need for all these other galaxies.”{1}

In other words, why would God create this huge universe, if He was primarily interested in His relationship with one species occupying a tiny planet? We always ask this reasonable question.

Allah also says in the Qur’an:

“Indeed the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind; but most people do not know.” (Qur’an 40: 57)
