  • CAIR doubles its fundraising goal of $50,000 to repair storm damage to Islamic Center and School

FLORIDA – A leading American Islamic group has announced they have raised more than $100,000 to rebuild the Bay County Islamic Society’s Islamic Center and School damaged during Hurricane Michael, WJHG reported.

“It was just a very wonderful feeling to see the whole community, people of different faiths even, to be contributing to rebuild the mosque and the school,” said Hiba Rahim the Council on American-Islamic Relations Northwest Regional Coordinator.

The mosque was destroyed last October when Hurricane Michael, the fiercest storm to hit Florida in a quarter century and the third-most powerful ever to strike the US mainland, roared into the state’s Gulf coast with tree-snapping winds and towering waves.

According to Rahim, the original goal was to raise $50,000, but they doubled that goal with the help of the community and others from around the country.

She said the money collected will be split between repairing the school and Islamic Center. They’ve already started on the school so kids can go back to class.

Rahim said the organization has plans to repair and expand parts of the Islamic center.

CAIR was also part of the Day of Humanity event Saturday at the Bay County Government Center to give out household items such as kitchenware and furniture to victims of the storm.
