Islamic Center Asks Worshippers to Wear Purple on Friday

DEARBORN – A Michigan Islamic center is asking its worshippers to wear purple during Friday prayers this week, October 21, to raise awareness of domestic violence.

“We’ve done a number of workshops and different awareness events,” Kassem Allie, executive administrator of the Islamic Center of America, in Dearborn, told Detroit Free Press on Thursday, October 20.

“Really, it’s to inform the public and offer resources to those who, perhaps, know of someone in a domestic violence situation, and to really kind of remove the stigma from domestic violence and allow people to bring it out in the open,” Allie said.

The campaign asks Muslim worshippers to don purple, hijab for women and Kufi, brimless hat, for men, during Friday prayer.

They were also asked to share their pictures on social media with the tag “#ICAGoesPurple.”Islamic Center Asks Worshippers to Wear Purple on Friday

The event, one of several events held by the mosque around the topic, is aimed at raising awareness of domestic violence and showing true Islamic teachings regarding treating wives.

The event is from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm at the center, 19500 Ford Road in Dearborn.

The campaign is being organized in conjunction with ACCESS, a Dearborn-based social services organization.

In Islam, marriage is a sacred bond that brings together a man and a woman by virtue of the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

Each partner in this sacred relationship must treat the other properly and with respect.

Woman is recognized by Islam as the full and equal partner of the man in the procreation of humankind.

By this partnership, she has an equal share in every aspect. She is entitled to equal rights, she undertakes equal responsibilities, and she has as many qualities and as much humanity as her partner.

Moreover, the relations between the spouses in Islam should be based on tranquility, love and mercy.
