Ilhan Omar: When Representation Matters

WASHINGTON, DC – Minnesota’s Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar is becoming a role model for younger generations, as they believe that Muslims can ascend to leadership unapologetically and without having to compromise their religion, The Hill reported.

“At this moment, somewhere in the world, young girls and women who look like us are learning to believe that they too can change the world and that no dream is too big,” Omar tweeted.

“Representation matters.”

The tweet was shared with a photo for Omar and Ayanna Pressley, the first black woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts.

The two women are part of a record number of female lawmakers in the House.

Omar is also the first Somali-American (and hijab-wearing) Congresswoman in the US.

Omar’s journey to become the US first Somali-American Muslim lawmaker began in a refugee camp in Kenya when her family was escaping Somalia’s brutal civil war.
