I wanted to know more about awrah for men

The barest minimum required of an adult male in prayer or in the company of others, other than his spouse, in all circumstances, is to cover his body from navel to the knee as ruled by the majority of scholars and jurists.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by a person who exposed their thighs and told them to cover his thighs.”

Imam Ibn Taymiyyah concludes after reviewing the various reports on this issue: “It is not allowed for any male who can afford to find any piece of cloth to perform Salah while exposing their thighs.”

If therefore, you have deliberately exposed your thigh you ought to repeat the salah.

If it happened by accident, then you are excused.

So while at home alone or in front of his wife or close blood relations, while praying or otherwise, one may wear shorts covering from navel to knee.

However, he cannot walk into a mosque or gatherings or meetings wearing shorts.  Allah orders us to wear beautiful attire while visiting mosques.

We also ought to observe the norms and customs that enhance modesty and beauty. That is why while one may go around wearing shorts in a rural society, it cannot be tolerated in an advanced society today.

One of the golden rules of fiqh or jurisprudence states that the custom rules where there is no clear Shariah text to contradict it.
