AssalamualaikumSoon I am going to apply in universities for studying any engineering field. My question is whether it is halal to study mechatronics engineering I don't know much about it bit as far as I know about it deals with robot so if I study it and in the future if I make a robot I would prabably deal with designig its face, body so will it be a halal? Will it be a sin for studying this field? If I do study this field will making robots be halal?I hope you understand. Assalamualaikum

There is nothing wrong with studying mechatronics. In fact, Muslims need to have well-qualified cadres in this field to help develop our Muslim nation. You are encouraged to be one of those cadres.

Robots have become widely used in a variety of fields and do not have to be in human or animal form. It is prohibited to shape a robot in a human or animal form since this has the same ruling of creating images and shaping statues.

The Messenger (peace and blessing be upon him) said, “The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: ‘Breathe life into that which you have created.” (Al-Bukhari) But shaping robots in human forms is not necessary in the multidisciplinary field of mechatronics and you can avoid it.

Assalamu'alaykum. If someone gives salaam through loudspeaker, and the greeter is far from me (such in a public place), is it obligatory for me to answer it? Does he have to hear my response? Also, there are cases where someone greets me and I couldn't reply because it was noisy or he immediately left before I could reply. In such case, am I sinful? Jazakallah

Almighty Allah says in the Qur’an what means,

“And whenever you are greeted with a salutation, then return the greeting with an even better salutation. Or, [at the least,] return it.” (An-Nisaa’ 4:86)

According to this Quranic injunction, returning salam greeting is obligatory. To fulfill this obligation, one has to raise his voice enough to let the greeter hear his repaid salam.

However, if salam greeting is given for a crowd or a group of persons, returning it becomes a collective, not a personal, duty; that is, if anyone returns it, this is enough to fulfill the obligation.

Of course, if one cannot let the greeter hear his/her the repaid salam, due to loud noise, for example, he/she is not sinful.

As a general rule, one’s inability to fulfill an obligation, exonerates him/her from liability.

Assalamualykumwrwb, Is it permissible to listen to Quran while studying my own academic subjects?

Allah the Almighty said in the Qur’an what means, “So when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it, [O humanity,] and give heed, so that you may be shown mercy.” (Al-A`raf 7:204)

For this Quranic injunction, one should not be busy while listening to the Qur’an so as not to distract one’ attention from concentrating on the recitation.

Still if one can listen while doing something that does not need much concentration, there is nothing wrong with that.

If one, however, is completely inattentive to the Qur’an and is mainly focusing on something else, he should stop the Quranic recitation as it is not proper to show indifference to the Qur’an.

Assalamualaikumshaikh,as far I know, if mahram describes her mahram female relatives to others or he is tempted by seeing her then she has to hijab in front of her mahram. but mahram may describe his mahram female relatives to others without her knowledge while she trust him or the mahram feels temptation toward her but did not express it. with these uncertainties should women do hijab even in front of all mahram?

The Shari`ah rulings are based on normal and regular cases; exceptions have their own rulings. Normally, a mahram does not look at his female mahram with desire and does not describe her to others in a sensual way.

Therefore, a Muslim woman is not obligated to have full hijab in front of her male mahram and she may reveal of her body such parts that usually appear in her housework, such as her head, arms, shin, and neck.

It is also noteworthy that maharem (pl. of mahram) are not equal in this regard.

For example, a woman has to be more reserved with her husband’s adult son than with her father.

But in abnormal cases when a woman knows that her male mahram describes her to others or that his looks to her are unusual, she has to take on her full hijab and be more reserved with him.

Salam Aleikum, Some time ago I came across this hadeeth that states that women are lacking in reason and in religious commitment. The Prophet Muhammed pbuh said: “I have not seen any lacking in reason and religious commitment but (at the same time) more able to rob the wisdom of the wise, except one of you [women].”I have a very hard time understanding and accepting this hadeeth. This hadeeth comes across very harsh and demeaning to women, even though our Prophet would never be like that, I became very confused when reading this hadeeth and I could not find a good explanation. I hope someone can explain the story behind this hadeeth in sha Allah. Thank you in advance!

Imam Al-Bukhari reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) once went out to the prayer yard to offer the Prayer of `Eid-al-Adha or Al-Fitr. Then he passed by the [attending] women and said, “O women! Give charity, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were of you (women).” They asked, “Why is it so, O Allah’s Messenger?” He replied, “You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen any among those lacking in intellect and religion who are more overwhelming to a man possessing reason and insight than you.” The women asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! What is deficient in our intellect and religion?” He said, “Is not the testimony of two women equal to the testimony of one man?” They replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is deficiency in her intellect. Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?” The women replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is deficiency in her religion.”

The hadith clearly bears no bias against women nor does not mean to humiliate them. There are physical and psychological differences between men and women based on the role for which each sex was created. They are meant to complete, not to vie with, each other.

The Shari`ah takes these differences into consideration and rulings and laws have been prescribed accordingly.

Women are commonly known to be more passionate; nevertheless, a woman has the ability to overpower a wise man with her passion. For this reason, a testimony of two women is equal to the testimony of one man, from Sshari`ah perspective.

Allah says in the Qur’an what means:

“Moreover, bring two witnesses from your men to witness [it]. But if there are not two men, then [you may bring] a man and two women from those whom you [mutually] approve of as witnesses, so that if one of the two should err then the other one can remind [her].” (Al-Baqarah 2:282)

In this regard, women are relatively deficient in comparison to men; though they are not blamable for that.

From another perspective, being more passionate is a positive quality that helps women achieve their role and fulfill their duties that cannot be done otherwise and that men usually fail to achieve.

The Shari`ah also takes women’s psychological changes during menses into account and relieves them from fasting and prayer during this period. This is another relative deficiency; though they are not blamable for it as well.

So, taking the occasion of the text into account, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wondering of such contradiction and never intended to demean women.

Finally, we need always to read any text within the overall Shari`ah context. The Shari`ah respects women and has given them unprecedented and unmatched rights.

The Qur’an has honored women and mentioned a number of them as exemplary figures. A good number of the female companions set model examples for Muslims.

Islamic history if full of brilliant women in different fields of life activities. How then can one misinterpret the prophetic text to express bias against women?

Assalamualaicoum! I performed wudhu and prayed, but after a while I found that a part of my nail is covered with nail polish. Should I renew wudhu and repeat my prayer, if its time already passed? Thank you.

Nail polish forms a layer over the nail, which prevents water from reaching this part during wudu’. Therefore, a woman has to remove it completely before making wudu’ as its existence renders wudu’ invalid. Accordingly, the salah performed with this wudu’ needs to be made up.

Removal here means to leave no trace for the polish at all, according to the majority of scholars. There is, however, another opinion adopted by a group of scholars that if the trace left after removal is very insignificant, the wudu’ is still valid.

So, based on this opinion, if the trace you have found is insignificant, you do not have to repeat the salah; otherwise, you have to make up that salah, even if the time has already passed.

Assalamalaicoum! If a man touched a woman with desire (no sex!), is it ok for him to marry her daughter? Thanks in advance.

Touching a woman with a desire is a sinful act that requires sincere repentance. In a prophetic narration, authenticated by trustworthy scholars, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), warned, “Having his head stabbed with an iron needle is better for one of you than to touch a woman who is not lawful for him [to touch].” At-Tabarani and Al-Bayhaqi)

In another hadith, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) considered this unlawful touch as a degree of zina.

However, such a prohibited touch, just like a prohibited look, has no consequences with regard to the legal relation with the touched woman. So, a man may marry this woman or any of her female relatives.

Assalaamualekum. In Islam is it allowed for the kids to take up the surname of the mother? But the name of the father would be given as it is wherever required without any change. If taking the surname of mother is haraam or prohibited is it allowed in some cases as for example in a country like India one surname is considered superior over the other (I don't believe in it though)..Is it allowed if in case the mother belongs to community that is considered higher than the father's community, can kids take up the surname of the mother?? In India the Muslims also follow the caste system and make fun to those having surnames that is believed to belong to lower community. Can the kid take up the surname Sheikh if the father's surname is not Sheikh but the mother's surname is Sheikh? Please do answer soon. Thanks.

Allah the Almighty says in the Qur’an what means, “[As to adopted children,] you shall call them by [the names that disclose the paternity of] their [natural] fathers. Such [attribution] is fairest [to them] in the sight of God.” (Al-Ahzab 33:5)

Muslim scholars, thus, are in agreement that a child may not be attributed to the mother except in the case of illegitimate children. Even on the Day of Resurrection people will be called by their fathers’ names.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “On the Day of Resurrection you will be called by your names and by your fathers’ names, so give yourselves good names.” (Abu Dawud)

This attribution to the father and his lineage entails rights and duties prescribed by the Shari`ah based on such attribution.

Hence, to give a child the mother’s surname goes in contradiction with the Shari`ah principles and objectives in this regard.

If I pray for perfect score in an exam, if it is not good for me and Allah accepts the prayer in a different way, can I still expect the score which is the best for me? For example if the best score for me is 90 percent and I pray for 100% can I still expect 90% if I work hard? Thanks

The question is not clear. But, in general, du`aa’ (supplication/prayer) is one of our strong weapons in this life to achieve what we aspire for and to fulfill our responsibilities.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

Still the answer to our supplication refers to the Wisdom and knowledge of Allah. Sometimes the answer is delayed for some wisdom that we are not aware of. Sometimes it is out of Allah’s mercy that a specific supplication is not fulfilled.

The Messenger of Allah said, “The supplication of anyone of you will be answered if he does not grow impatient and say: I supplicated but without being answered.”

Moreover, the answer may take a different form. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) tells us that “There is no man who calls upon Allah with a supplication, except that he will be answered. Either it shall be granted to him in the world, or be reserved for him in the Hereafter, or, his sins shall be expiated in accordance with the extent that he supplicated – as long as he does not supplicate for some sin, or for severing the ties of kinship…”
