Live Fatwa (General Session)

Dear Brothers/Sisters,

Thank you very much for joining us in this Live Fatwa session. We would like also to thank our guest, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, for answering the questions directed to him. You will find the answers to your questions below.

Assalamu'alaikumI am working in a public transportation network. In 2016, the company received funding from several companies, and these companies are - most, if not all, from America. The problem is, it is a fact that America supports Zionism. The taxes that American citizens paid are given to Israel. Should I quit then? Thanks.

If your conscience is bothering you, then you should find another job.

If not, then you may continue while asking Allah forgiveness. Allah tells us in the Qur’an that we are only accountable for things we have any control over. Therefore, we cannot control what the present government is doing; however, we can work to reverse such policies by working to get people who oppose such policies; that would be a long term solution rather than making protests or boycotts alone!

In conclusion, it is the duty of American Muslims to work with other citizens of America to change such policies by voting those who are opposed to them.

As-salaam alaikum,Questions below:1. I understand there are various conditions of making masah over the socks in wudu. One of them is that they must be "thick" and we should be able to walk in them. Do modern day cotton socks fulfill all the conditions of masah, despite not being waterproof?2. How should one correct a perceived mistake while reciting Fatiha, or another surah, while praying?3. If there is no way to wash the penis with water available at the time, is it sufficient to clean the penis of madhi with just toilet paper (similar to urine/feces)?Jazak'allah!

  1. “In answering this question, I would like to cite here one of my earlier answers:

In the classical manuals of Fiqh wiping is generally taken to be restricted to leather socks/stockings. However, there is nothing in the sources to restrict the permission to leather only. The original intent of the permission was to bring ease and comfort; people normally wear socks/stockings regardless of the material they are made of in order to ward off dust, and protect the feet from heat or cold. Since it is inconvenient to take them off all the time, permission was granted by the Prophet (peace be upon him) to wipe over them for a period of one day and night for a resident and three days and nights for a traveler.

That the permission to wipe on socks/stockings is not limited to leather is the view authenticated by great scholars and Mujtahids such as Ibn Taymiyyah and others; the reasoning is quite clear: The Prophet (peace be upon him) never stated that the permission was limited to leather stockings. Therefore the same rule can be extended to all types of socks/stockings regardless of whether they are made of leather, cotton or wool, so long as it is Halal (permitted) material. There are, however, certain conditions to be considered for the permissibility of wiping such as the following: a); socks/stockings must be thick and not transparent so that water does not seep through when wiped over them; b); they must cover both the upper and the lower parts of the feet up-to the ankle-bones; c); they must be worn after purification; d); one must not take them off; e); wiping must not exceed the period of one full day and night in the case of a resident and three days with nights for a traveler. Finally, one must remove them if Ghusl (bathing) becomes obligatory.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

To conclude: It is permissible to wipe on thick cotton or nylon socks/stocking. In case of those who are working in offices or factories or campuses, it may even be better for them to make use of this allowance in Shari`ah, especially where washing feet may create undue hardships or becomes a source of undue misgivings, etc. It is best for them to put on their socks after having completed ablutions in the morning; then they can continue wiping on them during the duration of their work or absence from home for a whole day or until they return home.”

  1. I do not quite understand this question: If my understanding is correct, you should correct the mistake as soon as you are aware of it in prayer; if the imam has made a mistake, the follower has to correct him. If he became aware of the mistake later, then he should offer two prostrations before salam; this is known as sujud al-sahw.
  2. If water is not available then one should wipe the penis clean with toilet paper and perform tayammum. When water becomes available, one should wash the genitals with water and perform wudu.

As'salamualykum,Please inform the permissible and prohibited intercessors in our Du'a that we can use.JazakAllahuKhairan

Intercession is a crucial issue that we ought to form a sound understanding of it to safeguard our faith. For many have erred in the way they practice it often bordering on shirk, if not a crass form of shirk.

Shirk being the mother of all sins in Islam, no Muslim should be complacent about it. The issue requires a detailed treatment. However, I would like to answer your question only briefly here:

Firstly, it is important to affirm that as Muslims we cannot call upon anyone other than Allah, nor can we dilute our faith by ascribing divine powers to anyone besides Him.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) told his cousin: My son, if you ask, ask only Allah; if you seek help, seek help only from Allah.”

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

Therefore, we are not allowed to ask the Prophet Muhammad or anyone else to intercede for us; however, it is permissible for us to ask Allah to grant us the intercession of His Messenger.

As for the permissible methods of intercession, let me list them briefly as follows:

  1. We should ask Allah by invoking His beautiful names and attributes. Allah says, “Allah has beautiful names, so invoke them while praying to Him.”

If you study carefully du’as of the Prophet (peace be upon him) one would find how he invoked Allah’s mercy by invoking many of His attributes and names. See for instance, the du’a known as Sayyid al-istighaar which begins with : Allaahumma anta rabbee…

Another example is the du’a which begins: Allaahumminneeabduka, ibn abdika….

  1. We can call upon Allah by invoking a specific name of Allah for a particular need: for instance while asking forgiveness one can say: yaaghafoor, yaaghaffaar, yaaraheem, yaarahmaan, etc. while praying for cure, one should say: Yaashaafee, yaaraheeem, etc.
  2. One may pray to Allah by invoking one’s own faith or good deeds done sincerely for the sake of Allah: this is what we learn from the story of the three people who were stranded in a cave; each one of them prayed by invoking the best of their deeds, and prayed to Allah to save them.
  3. One may pray in the manner of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) by expressing one’s utter helplessness and dire need. He was in such a desperate situation, having travelled on foot a long distance to escape the tyrant Pharoah. So, he turned to Allah turning to Allah as a helpless child would turn to his mother for help; He prayed: Lord, (I am in such a desperate state that) I am in need of whatever help You choose to send my way!” Allah answered his prayer; however, we need to remember he prayed to Allah only after he went out of his way to help the women to fetch water for their herd!
  4. Finally, we are allowed to ask someone who is pious to pray for us.

These are the prescribed modes of intercession we should use in offering supplications.

I pray to Allah to help us remain steadfast in sound faith.

if hypothetically speaking, one of my friends is dating a guy who intend to marry later (which is not allowed in islam )and she really wants to get high results in her studies, would that(dating the guy) result in Allah punishing her with bad scores even though she prays and studies extremely hard? Regards,

I cannot speak on behalf of Allah; all that I can say for sure is that anyone who is indulging in sins cannot expect the blessings of Allah. Even if she succeeds in her studies through hard work, that does not mean that Allah is pleased with her.

As humans, we ought to care more about pleasing Allah, our Creator, and Lord, than about getting high marks in our studies.

I pray to Allah to inspire us all to seek repentance and ask forgiveness of Allah while trying hard to excel in all of our efforts. Allah says, “Whoever is mindful of Allah, Allah will grant them comfort and ease in their endeavors.”

Why is it difficult to repay ramadan.

Since I don’t understand the intent of your question, I cannot answer it.

If you want an answer, you should spell out clearly what you mean and resubmit the question.

Assalamu'alaykum. I have a hobby to draw. But recently I have been very cautious with my drawing and stopped for awhile. I like to draw both males and females, I keep my drawing so that they do not incite sexual desires. But if I draw woman and show part of awrah, is this impermissible? What about cartoons that are not realistic? I like to draw fashion so this is important to me. Although, I am eager to know the opinions of the scholar. May Allah bless you.

In answering your question, I cannot do any better than citing here one of my earlier answers:

“There is nothing in Islam to forbid drawing in itself–unless you are drawing images for worship. Since drawing is a most powerful medium of communication these days, it can be used either for promoting truth or promoting vices. No doubt, it is haraam to draw images for worship. If there is no such fear, then drawing as a form of art and as a medium of communication cannot be considered as haraam. It is comparable to poetry, which was condemned by the Qur’an–unless one practises it to promote the cause of truth, justice and piety.

This, in a nutshell, is the preferred view of scholars on this issue. Mind you historically Muslims have been practicing this form of art for centuries, and they have left us a rich legacy of Islamic art. Therefore,  I advise you to study the Muslim art and architecture. With your talent, I hope, insha Allah you can add to this proud tradition.  I pray to Allah to inspire you to excel in your art work, while shunning that which is clearly forbidden.”

I want to ask whether or not ahmedies are muslims or not because in my country and most muslim countries they are not considered muslims?

A Muslim is one who believes in all of the basic tenets of Islam and adheres to the pillars.

It is common knowledge in Islam that accepting the Prophet Muhammad as the final prophet and messenger of Allah is integral aspect of faith in Islam.

Therefore, if anyone refuses to accept this article of faith, he or she goes out of the fold of Islam.

Is it mandatory for men in Islam to wear the trousers or pant above ankles?

There is no need for us to be rigid over this issue.  As long as a person does not let his pants or trousers touch the ground, it is fine.

For further details, let me cite here one of my earlier answers on this issue:

“The Prophet, peace be upon him, is reported to have said, “Allah will not look favourably towards a person who drags his/her clothes on the ground out of false pride.” Upon hearing this one of his foremost companions, namely Abu Bakr, enquired, “But I am one of those whose clothes fall below my ankles?” Then the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “You are not doing it out of pride!”

It is easy to conclude from this that the Prophet’s interdict against allowing one’s clothes fall below the ankles is primarily intended to counter the pomp and flamboyancy in regards to attire that were characteristic of the Arab aristocracy at the time. Strangely enough such customs still persist among the rich and famous today as we the royalties among Arabs and others often dragging their high flowing robes on the ground while walking.

While condemning such habits, The Prophet, peace be upon him, intended to send a message to Muslims that they must avoid such extravagant and flamboyant life-style and mannerisms and manifest humility, modesty and prudence in their life-style and demeanor.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

It is only when we take the trouble to study the Islamic teachings in their context that we can truly appreciate the wisdom and rationale of those teachings. Failure to do so is no different than someone preferring to grope in darkness, abandoning the light in his own hands. It is ironic that the Qur’an exhorts the faithful to reason and think and avoid the thoughtless behaviour of brutes and pagans who simply follow customs and conventions of their forefathers without critically examining their utility or benefit, and yet most Muslims hold on to quite irrational views about their religion.

In conclusion: The Prophet’s interdict against letting the clothes fall below the ankles was never intended at those who wear pants, provided one takes care not to drag them on the floor. To stretch this to imply that we must roll up our pants is taking this a bit too far. While thus seeking to apply the letter of the law, we end up forgetting the primary intent of the Lawgiver which was to teach Muslims to wear the cloth of piety, humility and modesty in their mannerisms and appearance as well as while carrying themselves around. May Allah bestow on us wisdom and discernment, and may He forgive us our trespasses and slip-ups-aameen.”

I am aware that it is prohibited in Islam to wear nail polish since while doing wudu the water molecules aren't able to reach your nails. There is a new nail polish that recently came out called breathable nail polish, it supposedly allows the molecules to flow through. Is this true, is it allowed in Islam to wear breathable nailpolish? If not, why?

If the nail polish acts like a barrier preventing water contacting the nails, then it ought to be removed before ablution. However, if the nail polish does not interfere with it, then it is fine. Here is what I found on the site of those who promote such nail polish; they have this posted on their site:

“Our nail polishes are popular with muslim women who can now enjoy their manicures and pedicures knowing they are using a wudhu (a pre-prayer ablution which requires them to wash their hands and feet) friendly nail polish. Our formula uses a special polymer which enables oxygen and moisture to be transported through the nail polish. I’ts permeability allows moisture and oxygen to make contact with the fingernails after you have applied nail polish. All our breathable lacquers fulfill tests for water permeability performed in a controlled laboratory environment. The normal nail polishes prevent oxygen and moisture from getting in contact with their nails. For this reason we consider our nail polishes to be a healthier option for your nails.”

https://www.lenanailpolish.com/

If this can be verified, then it can be worn without any issue. There is no need to remove it prior to performing ghusl or wudhu.

I want to know if it is permissible for my 4th grade son to take on playing violin in 4th grade as a school activity.

Your son is allowed to take violin lessons in the school.

For further details, you may refer to my detailed answers on this site and others; let me cite here one of them:

“Music is an issue that has been hotly debated by scholars of the past and the present. While many of them have been generally inclined to condemn all forms of music—with the singular exception of al-dduff (tambourine) in weddings–, quite a few of them have taken a more positive approach of considering only music containing sensual, pagan, or unethical themes or subliminal messages as being categorically forbidden.

The latter view seems to be more consistent with the general nature of Islam, which is undoubtedly a complete way of life that caters to all of the genuine human instincts and needs within permissible limits. Thus to say that all music is forbidden in Islam does not seem to agree with the balanced approach of Islam to issues of human life and experience.

Traditions often cited by the first group scholars to justify condemnation of all musical instruments and music, according to some scholars, are considered as either spurious, or phrased in such way solely because of their associations with drinking, dancing, and sensuality.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

While everyone agrees that all forms of music that contain pagan, sensual themes, or subliminal messages are clearly forbidden, the latter group of scholars considers all forms of music free of such themes and messages as permissible.

As a matter of fact, we know from the authentic traditions that the Prophet, peace be upon him, not only allowed music in the weddings but also listened to girls singing: While listening to girls singing on such an occasion, he interrupted them only once when they sang the following verse, “In our midst is a prophet who knows what will happen tomorrow”; whence, the Prophet, peace be upon him, told them, “Cut this sentence out, and continue singing what you had been singing earlier.”

There is nothing in the sources to indicate that the above permission is limited to the occasion of wedding, as some people tend to think.

In light of these, according to the last mentioned group of scholars, music that is deemed to be free of un-Islamic and unethical themes and messages—the same is true of musical instruments so long as they are not used for the above—have been considered as permissible.

A final word: Islam clearly prohibits mixed dancing of males and females.”

Assalamualekom, I know if you missed fasting in ramadan you should make up these days as soon as possible. Last year i was pregnant so ididnt fast, now i want to fast these days before the next ramadan starts. But i read in one of your articles that "However, we should stop fasting as we get closer to Ramadan. In this way, we stay away from joining the fasting of Sha`ban with that of Ramadan." And right now its the month of sha'ban. So shall i fast the days i missed, which is almost the whole month and emmediatly go over and fast ramadan of this year, or should i stop fasting 5 days or so before ramadan (and lose these 5 days from last year) and then start this yearsramadan as normal ? Inshaallah you understand what i mean. Jazak Allah

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

If you missed obligatory fasts of Ramadan, you should make up for them as soon as possible. The answer I have given applies only to those who are observing voluntary fasts.

Therefore, I would urge you not to be slack in making up the missed fasts.

Assalammualaikumwrwb. I got married when I was still 6 months pregnant. Is the Nikah considered sah/Halal? A few months later my husband and I got into an argument. I was too afraid so I left the house without him knowing to meet my parents. When he found out I was not at home he called me several times But I didnt answer his calls. He send me a message and warn me if I didnt go back home and if I didn't call him back at 12am he will divorce me. But I still remain silent. Than he send me a message saying that he divorce me with 3 talak. I was still 8 months pregnant. He was not himself and he was under influence of drugs. The next day he told me that he was sorry and he didn't aware of his actions and he didn't mean the talak as he was too angry and was not sober. So my concern is firstly is our marriage sah/Halal? Secondly did the 3 talak falls? Please advise. Thank you.Wasalam

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

Divorce is not valid only when pronounced in a sober state of mind. Divorce uttered in a state of drunkenness or extreme anger is not deemed as valid.

For details, let me cite here one of my previous answers:

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

“If you never cherished the intention of divorcing your wife and never contemplated divorcing her and you made the above statement in an extreme state of anger, then it cannot be deemed as a valid divorce. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “Actions are reckoned by their intentions”. Moreover, you state that you made the statement in an extreme state of anger: The Prophet, peace be on him, is reported to have said, “There is no (valid) divorce in an extreme state of anger”; this is due to the fact that in an extreme state of anger, a person is not in his right mind; rather he may be unsure and unaware of his words or actions. In this sense he no different than a drunkard whose actions are not considered valid in Islam. Since marriage in Islam is a solemn contract, it cannot be considered as being broken by such whimsical words and actions that do not represent any premeditated intention on your part.

So don’t consider yourself divorced from your wife simply based on such thoughtless remarks or statements; rather ask forgiveness of Allah and be resolved never to indulge in such reckless statements or actions. It may be a good idea to expiate your mistake by offering some charity to the poor. You may give any amount that you can afford to the poor by way of charity.

After having said this, I must caution you against indulging in such impulsive behaviour in future. It is important that you keep in mind the following:

1) You must learn to manage your anger: Remember anger is the vehicle of Satan; unless we learn to control our anger, we may end up saying or doing things we feel sorry for later. This is why the Prophet, peace be upon him, advised a man who had come to ask him for advice saying, “don’t get angry”; when the man repeated the same question three times, the Prophet repeated his answer three times. What the Prophet meant was we are not to allow ourselves to be carried away by our anger to do things that are either sinful or undesirable; rather we must restrain ourselves against such actions by realizing the ugly nature of anger.

2) Divorce is the most abominable of all permissible things in the sight of Allah. This is why the Prophet, peace be upon him, said that Satan will send his troops to seduce children of Adam in diverse ways every day; when they return to him to report their day’s work he salutes especially those who have succeeded in splitting a man and his wife. So never allow yourself to succumb to the temptations of Satan. Rather cherish your marriage and foster it.

3) It seems to me that you are unable to balance your duties towards your spouse with the duties you owe towards your parents, brothers and sisters. You should not compromise one for the other; you should give each one his/her due. You must know that they are not identical in nature, rather each is different from the other;

4) Often times, due to ignorance, parents, brothers and sisters interfere in the marriage of their sons or brothers; they may simply be jealous of their in-law or harbour some kind of malice towards her, and then they may incite him against her; it is therefore the duty of the man to deal with the situation wisely; he should never neglect the dark side of human nature and never allow himself to be carried away by their stories against her. He needs to be firm and resolute in making them understand that they cannot interfere in his marriage. Otherwise, he may end up doing injustice (zulm) towards his wife; remember zulm is one of the worst of crimes in Islam.

5) If there are issues between you and your wife that are outstanding and you are not able to sort them out you should resort to counselling. If you can find qualified and knowledgeable people who have experience in counselling get their help. That is the way to deal with the issues in marriage rather than by resorting to emotional outbursts and using the word of talaq to intimidate or take revenge. Using the words of talaq in this way is akin to jesting with the laws of Allah which are instituted for the purpose of restoring justice, equity and balance in settling human affairs.

May Allah guide all of us to the truth in our words and actions and may He save us all against the evil inclinations embedded in our nature-aameen.”

Can a Muslim go to temple just to help them serve food for donations?

A Muslim can go to a temple if a need arises as long as he does not participate in the pagan rituals they perform. There is nothing in Islam worse than idolatry.

Therefore, if you are going there for volunteering for a particular project involving soup kitchen or feeding the poor, etc., there is nothing objectionable. It would be a good work meriting rewards in the sight of Allah.

We may do well to remember that the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions participated in all of the good works done by the Quraysh in the Haram who were pagans and used to serve as the custodians of the Kab’ah which was full of idols before they converted to Islam.

Assalamalaikum. Please I want to know if a man can pray and lead his family (consisting of his wife and daughter) at home in prayers rather than going to the masjid.

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

It is important for him to attend the prayer in congregation at the mosque – if he can do so without difficulty.

However, he is allowed to lead his family in the same prayer before or after praying at the mosque.

We learn from the traditions that Mu`adh ibn Jabal, one of the eminent companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to pray with the Prophet in the congregation and then head towards Quba to lead the people in salah for the same prayer.

Asalamualikum.. I want to know about the rulling of using gelatin in food and medicine. Actually some say that its completely haram to eat gelatin based products while others are of view that after using in food or medicine it is transformed in halal form. so plzz help to clear the confusion ???

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

While we are to do our best to avoid foods that are doubtful, there is no need for us to be overly rigid on this issue, especially when it comes to medicines.

For further clarification, let me cite here part of my answer to a similar question in another forum:

“Suppose some haram elements such as gelatin or by-products of pork went to the production of medicine, it is still considered halal; for these ingredients have been wholly transformed and turned into a different substance altogether.  It is known as the principle of Istihalah or transformation of a product into something else. An example:  Alcohol is haram, but once it has become vinegar, it is undoubtedly halal. The same rule applies to substances that were once haram – if they have been changed – acquiring new attributes and names.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim states: The texts forbidding dead carcasses, blood, the flesh of swine and intoxicants, cannot be extended to crops, fruits, ashes, salt, mud, vinegar – even though the latter may have their source in the former as their base or used as compost.

Furthermore, even if we are to assume that that Gelatine in most medicines comes from pigs, you are allowed to take the medication – if alternatives are not available. Such is the ruling based on the rule of umum al-balwa which jurists use; accordingly, where something is unavoidable, it can be considered as permissible.

In conclusion, you should have no reservation in using the medication prescribed by your physician…”

Assalaamalakiumwaratullahiwabaarakutu, I am a big animal lover and my occupation duties consist of touching cats and dogs all day. I am covered in fur all the time and I understand my prayers are invalid if I have four on my clothes. I always just wait until I get home to make up all my prayers. How can I pray at work? And how do I make wudu after I touched a cat or dog?

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

Islam teaches mercy and kindness towards all of God’s creation, including cats and dogs.

If your job involves handling and touching dogs and cats, then some of the strict laws of taharah or ritual purification are not applicable to you as ruled by Imam Ibn Taymiyyah and others.

In other words, while you should do your best to wash with soap and water all those areas you come into contact with urine, droppings, and saliva of dogs. You are excused of what you cannot.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

Therefore, the fact you are handling dogs should not prevent you from performing your prayers on time. You should pray by doing the best you can in the given circumstances. Allah assures us in the Qur’an that He does not punish us for things we have no control over.

It is important for me to point out: while the majority of scholars say that dog’s saliva is najas and we should wash our clothes or parts of our bodies if we come in contact with it. However, Imam Malik does not share this view.

In conclusion, I would urge you to pray on time and not to put off your prayers until you get home.

What can I read on dreams. Do dreams have meanings? How does one interpret dreams?

I do not claim to have the knowledge to interpret dreams.

As for the Islamic understanding of the nature of dreams, let me cite here my earlier answer:

“Dreams, as we can safely infer from the Islamic sources, are of three types: The first of these is termed mubashshiraat, which are sound dreams that are indicative of glad tidings. They result from angelic inspirations or suggestions cast by Allah in our consciousness. Referring to such dreams, the Prophet (peace be on him) said: “Nothing of the prophecy remains now (i.e. after his own call to prophethood) except sound visions, which are bestowed on a righteous believer, and it constitutes one thirtieth of prophecy.”

This type of dream can include premonitions or intimations of things that might happen in the future. For instance a believer may experience a vision about his own imminent death, or some future events to occur, or receive some confirmation of his spiritual states, or even reminders/admonitions about his omissions or commissions. These may include visions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) or other prophets and communications with them, or visions of symbols of Islam such as the Ka’bah or the Prophet’s mosque, etc.

A second type of dream is the result of satanic whisperings or inspirations. Satan, the avowed enemy of man, is ever- present with us and he sees us in ways that we do not see him. Unless we take proper safeguards against him and such inspirations, he may trap us in his nets. He inspires in us all kinds of thoughts and suggestions, both in conscious and unconscious states. A person may be predisposed to such satanic visions and inspirations if he is constantly exposed to sights, sounds and thoughts that are obscene or filthy.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

A third type of dream can be termed as ‘idle dreams’, and they are due to the impact of unpalatable foods, or the over- exercise of one’s imaginations, or experiences in life which might also be reflected in one’s dreams.

A person experiencing a good vision is encouraged to share it with others—especially with those who are trustworthy and God-fearing; but if he/she experiences a bad dream, he/she is advised against disclosing it to anyone. In the latter case, immediately after experiencing such a dream, he/she is recommended to change the sleeping position, and seek refuge and protection in Allah by saying the following supplication:

Bismillaahialladheelaayazurru ma’ ismihishay’un fi al-ardhiwalaaa fi al-samaa’ wahuwa al-ssamee’ulaleem

(In the name of Allah; with His name nothing whatsoever on earth or heaven can do any harm; He is the all-Hearing, and the all-Knowing).

Referring to this, the Prophet (peace be on him) said, “thus he/she will be spared of any possible harm.”

While the first type of dream (i.e. mubashshirat) is what every believer should seek and strive for, he/she must surely guard against the second type of dream.

The surest way to block Satanic inspirations and whisperings is by taking refuge in Allah and through cultivating the habit of consistency in dhikr, right thinking, right living and right conduct. It is, therefore, highly recommended to go to bed in a state of purity, after having recited portions of the Qur’an (such as the surahs of Fatihah, Ikhlaas, Falaq and al-Nnas as well as Aayat al-Kursi), and to immerse oneself in dhikr and salah (i.e. saying blessings and sending salutations) on the Prophet (peace be on him) before one lapses into a state of sound sleep.”

As salaam alaikum ... are you able to please address the Islamic stance on royalty and how or why Muslim majority countries have them?

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

This concept is alien to Islam; it is clearly a pagan concept borrowed from the European feudal system.

Ironically, such pagan notions have been accepted without questioning by most Muslims today as we don’t find anyone questioning them.

Thanks to such pagan concepts, the wealth of many Muslim countries is divided up among the hundreds or even thousands of so-called ‘members of the royal family’ –  reducing the people to utter poverty and at the mercy of such feudal lords!

AssalamuAlaikum, In my 1st professional Examination, i gave 3 or 4 written exam out of 6 exams by knowing the questions of the exam before the examination was started. I cheated by this way. Before the cheating, I knew a fatwa which said that my income will not be haram if i will be qualified for that job . Knowing this fatwa, i was encouraged to do this cheating. Though i was aware of the matter that this cheating is haram and can affect my future income, I cheated on exam. Now i am regretting for my mistake. I have 3 question now--1)Will my future income be haram for this doing if i do my job sincerely ?2)If the first answer is halal then will my future income be haram because i had done cheating knowing that it is haram?Imean,is knowing about the ruling on cheating can make it haram for me?3) Will my certificate be halal? It should also be noted that in order to pass in Written exam, i also have to pass in Viva exam and if i fail in written exam,i also fail in viva exam. I gave viva exam honestly and passed.I am a student of 3rd year of 5 year course. I am very depressed because of this and i can't concentrate on my study.

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

You have committed a grave offense by cheating in the exam. You ought to repent and seek forgiveness of Allah.

Your income becomes pure and lawful only if you take immediate steps to rectify the situation by honestly studying the subjects you cheated and ensuring you excel in them. Since a mediocre doctor can endanger the lives of his patients, it is not permissible to practice medicine unless you are suitably qualified.

Therefore, you should change the field if you lack the confidence to succeed.

You also need to offer charities and make lots of istighfar to expiate for your grave sin.

I would also remind you repentance is acceptable only – if one fulfills certain conditions, which include the following:

  1. Refraining from such sins in future
  2. Feeling remorse over one’s sins;
  3. Resolving never to do the same;

Finally, one ought to compensate for such sins through good deeds; Allah says, “Good deeds wipe out bad deeds.” (Hud 11:114)

I have a friend that has some medical issues that prevent her from being able to fast during Ramadan cause of her medicine she has to drink water or it will hurt her kidneys, but she don't have the financial means to feed the hungry, what can she do?

If your friend is suffering from a terminal illness and therefore unable to fast, then she has to offer fidyah by feeding a person who is poor for every day of Ramadan. If, however, she is poor and she cannot afford to do so, then she is excused. Allah says: “Allah does not place on anyone a burden that he or she cannot bear.” (Al-Baqarah 2:286)

Having said this, I must rush to add: She should pay fidyah, if in case she becomes eligible to pay.

Sir ,I wanted to ask a question that, is it permissible to use alcoholic perfumes I m little confused because one of my friend told that it is permissible to use alcoholic perfumes

In answering your question, I would like to cite here one of my earlier answers:

“As Muslims, it is our Islamic duty to steer clear of prohibited things to the best of our ability. Therefore, if you know for sure that gel contains alcohol then you should avoid it as much as possible. However, because gel and cosmetics are generally applied externally on the skin, they are considered permissible if they are used only for external use according to the Fatwa of a number of scholars in the Muslim world.

This is based on the fact that the prohibition of consuming alcohol cannot be applied to external uses. Also, the amount of alcohol that is used in producing such cosmetics is so minor that one may overlook it without incurring a sin, because Shari’ah does not encourage extreme rigidity especially in matters that are of common use and cannot be avoided except with difficulty.

However, in case of doubt, it is always close to piety or Al-Wara` to avoid that which is doubtful in favor of that which is not doubtful. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said, “Leave alone what puts you in doubt and turn toward what put your heart at ease.”(Ahmad, Al-Tirmidhi, An-Nisa’i, Al- Hakim, and Ibn Hibban)

SalmamAlaikum. Please I'd like to know how to repay the jumma'ah prayer when you join but dont get any raka'a t. Someone told my I have to repay with 4 raka'ts but im not too sure.

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

Jumu`ah is the weekly assembly of Muslims; it is one of the great symbols of Islam, whose purpose is to build a vibrant community and foster unity among Muslims.

We are ordered by Allah in the Qur’an to hasten to respond the call of the muadhin on Friday and shun all other distracting activities or business. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also exhorts the faithful not only to observe the Friday prayer but also to exert oneself to go as early as possible to derive maximum blessings of the largest weekly assembly of Muslims. He also said that the rewards vary according to how soon one arrives at the mosque for the Friday prayer and that the angels sit at the entrance of the mosque and record the names of those who come early.  However, when the Imam arises to deliver the sermon, they close the register and listen to it. Furthermore, we learn from the traditions that khutbah is in place of two rak`ahs cut from Zhuhr prayer.

It is, therefore, clear from the above how important it is to arrive the mosque early and the blessings we lose by missing the khutbah.

Now let me come to your question: There is a consensus among scholars that those who miss the Khutbah are indeed missing abundant blessings. And the majority are of the view that those who do not catch the last rak`ah miss the Jumu`ah altogether and they need to pray Zhuhr. They base it on the tradition reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him): “Whoever catches one rak`ah with the imam, he catches the salah.” Imam Abu Hanifah, however, is of the view that even though he misses the full blessings, he catches the salah even if he were to join the salah while Imam is in the final sitting before Salam.

The conclusion: No one should deliberately delay his arrival at the mosque; by doing so he deprives himself of abundant blessings.

As salam wale kumwarahmatulawabarkatuhu, My question is based on property inheritance . My grandfather and grand mother left behind 10-12 acres of agricultural land and a house. My father had three brother and 2 sisters, My father died so I, my mother, my brother and my sister are legal heirs of his property and his inherited property. My question is one of my uncle and both aunts have migrated to Pakistan about more than 40 years back and have taken their nationality .ARE THEY ALSO THE SHARE HOLDER OF THE SAID PROPERTY. My uncle in India want to take the whole property and is even denying our share, so we are planning to take legal actions. According to Indian law only He and we are the inheritor of the property but what matters to me is what does Allah command on such situation. We are planning to sell the property after division by court. Please advise and your answer is early awaited. Thanks Allah Hafiz

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

Your uncle is committing a grave sin by denying the rights of legal heirs to your grandfather’s estate.

You should seek the help of a knowledgeable Imam or scholar or wise person in the community to speak to him so that he comes to senses and distribute the property according to the Islamic rules of inheritance.

If he still refusing to do that, then you have the right to resort to legal measures.

I am a Muslimah and I understand that men are different from women and that we have different needs along with that Polygamy is legal. I accept what Allah decrees is best for us, male or female, but how do I accept or not feel jealous if I find myself in a plural marriage? What are the benefits for women? Is it that I have more time to relax and have less pressure on me? I can have more time maybe starting my own business or reading Quran and having more free time to myself? How do I not feel jealous?

Monogamy is the ideal in Islam whereas polygamy is an exception to be resorted to in exceptional cases. Therefore, for you to assume that in Islam it is a man’s right to marry more than one wife and it is the destiny of woman to accept it whether she likes it or not is not true.

If, however, your husband has married someone because of concessions allowed in the Shari`ah, then you will be rewarded for your patience. You should pray to Allah to cure your heart of jealousy and ill-feeling towards his other wife.

However, at no time he is allowed to treat you unfairly; if he fails, then he is committing a grave sin.

I have information that is scary yet true about being close to death. I don't know whether I should share it or tell everyone. I have written a letter which I will be distributing to unbelievers especially on their website inshallah. I know it scary information but it is the truth, Please read the letter and please tell me If I have made mistakes. Shuckran for all your time. May Allah bless everyone for putting so much effort into About Islam mashallah. Here is the letterI have schizophrenia. Most of us suffer badly because of the voices. For those that believe in One God, we are constantly being harassed by them. The voices use religion against us. Lots of difficult topics arise. Here are only a few examples of what the voices try to force on us.1. That we are God 2. That we are the Devil 3. That we are the Anti Christ. 4. Images of Idols in our headsWhen unbelievers die, the same thing will happen. The voices will proclaim themselves as Gods or evens tell them that they are God. Images will appear of Idols in their heads. This is only one scenario that these voices have.To believe in One God is the key to heaven. That why the attacks are centred around making a believer worship more than one God. The only protection from them is God. To believe in one God is the easiest thing to do. While there’s life, there’s hope. The reason I am posting this thread is to help you understand what happens just before death. I almost died from the voices.Unbelievers don't understand Hell. No one has seen it, so it is understandable why you may be sceptical. But everyone knows about schizophrenia. It happens to millions of people. Schizophrenia is'nt only a mental fight but a spiritual one as well. If you study what we go through, you'll see the voices attack ones core which is our belief system. Why do you think they are doing this to believers? Because they want us to despair of God's mercy just like them. When Pharoah was about to drown, only then did he submit to God. But a voice told him that he was rebellious just a while ago. So his repentance was to no avail. When he saw God's power in the end, it did'nt help him. Don't be like Pharoah, you got a chance, use it to make a better life for yourselves Godwilling. Now you know a secret of death. What you do with it, is totally up to you.Shuckran for reading the letter.

I am sorry to say that yours is a medical issue; and therefore, you need to speak to a specialist; it has nothing with do with religious teachings. Islam teaches us to seek treatments when we face medical challenges, which include physical and mental problems. Schizophrenia is an issue which requires professional advice and treatment.

Therefore, I would urge not to hesitate in getting professional help. Speak to your family doctor; Insha Allah, he or she will be able to refer you to a specialist.

Salam. Is it haram to have veneers (like a thin layer of wood over your normal teeth to make them look more presentable)?

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

If it is simply a cosmetic procedure, it is not allowed or desirable. If, however, it is a corrective procedure intended to correct a deformity, then it is allowed.

Having said this, however, I must caution you against resorting to this procedure simply for cosmetic purposes; for to do so for mere cosmetic reasons is considered akin to mutilation of the creation of Allah.

If, on the other hand, it is considered a deformity and your teeth alignment causes you emotional and psychological harm as it invites jeers and laughs, then that is considered a genuine reason for undertaking corrective surgery.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, is reported to have told ‘A’ishah, “You are allowed to remove what is objectionable and causing harm!” One of the accepted principles of jurisprudence states, “harm/injury shall be averted”.

There are also precedents from the Prophet, peace be upon him, in the sources that he allowed his companions to resort to corrective procedures in case of broken teeth and nose.
