1- Assalam alikum will martyrs be judged on judgement day or are they already in jannah 2:154 3:169 2- And are martyrs the highest thing we can do in life does that mean Allah wants us to die young or does he want us to live long to good deeds is there anything we can do to be better than the martyrs or not

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Martyrs are those who fight and die in jihad; jihad should not be confused with the mayhem and blood shed that are unleashed against the civilians and innocent people under the false pretext of establishing a caliphate. This is nothing short of terrorism as declared by the eminent scholars and jurists all over the world.

As for those who die as martyrs fighting in a just war, they will be honored by Allah. All of their sins except involving violations of the rights of humans or Allah’s creation. Allah will not forgive such sins unless the victims themselves forgive them.

It is also important to point out that our mission in this life is to uphold truth and justice and act as vicegerents of Allah on this earth.

This is a stupendous task. Getting killed should not be an end in itself.

Real jihad is to struggle to make truth and justice prevail.

I am very much depressed about my life i was in relation with a guy from last 15years ..his parents refused not to have rista with me..iam in depression please i need duas to fill my wish ..i do pray but May be Allah doesnot want this but i cant forget this time period .how i move on in my life..

If you did forge an illicit relationship with a guy you ought to repent and seek forgiveness of Allah. By failing to do so, you are prolonging your misery and agony. Remember that sins would take away peace of mind and drag us further and further into grief and anxiety.

I would therefore urge you to forge the past and look to the future. The door of repentance is wide open; once you are willing to turn to Allah in repentance, He will forgive you and then you can seek His favors through good works and prayers.

Asslam 3laykun i need help i really do I am going to start from the begining I was 13 years old and came to lebanon i liked this guy so much so we went out i was small i know this is haram but please gear me out . We loved each other for 4 years During these years we were on and off like he would do things that will make my family mad so my family didnt like him at all and in these past 4 years the abuused me and hitted me so hard blood will come out and brused me and never leted me go outside the house for a 13 year old that was alot. So i turned 16 and my cousin wanted me so to get away from all the trouble i had i said yes mum was so happy she told everyone the nxt day his sister came and asked me infront of my mum do you want ur fiance or the one you love so i looked at my mum and said mum i want the one i love so then my mum hit me in front of her and said you are forced to take him because noone told you to say yes But i was 16 like i didnt even know what i was saying I am not 20 and have two kids and still deeeeeply inlove the other guy me and my husand have been together for 4 years and since dat one we gight my husband knows i dont love him but staying with me because my family and my kids but i dont love him at all i hateeeee him I want a divorce so bad i hhate my life i once stabbed my selff because he hit me i hate him so much but thats because he found out i was talking to my ex on the phone but what can i do my ex will always be in my heart how is it my fault why do i deserve this life no love no nothing because my famy can be happy ? Should i put my happiness first or always try to hurt myself and kill myself because of the man im living with

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

You are simply inviting misery by dwelling on your past infatuation with the guy. You are a married woman with kids. By walking away from your marriage to go after this man you dated in the past you will be destroying not only your life but the lives of your children and your husband.

You should speak to your physician who may refer you to a professional who can help you overcome  this dangerous infatuation and find ways of healing.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

You should also seek repentance. Remember, life of this world is transient; and we all will be accountable for our thoughts, behaviour and actions. If you believe in eternal life, you should forget your sinful liaison with this man and try to strengthen your marriage life and devote your precious time in providing nurturing care of your children.

You cannot walk away from marriage by saying you did not agree to the marriage.

I pray to Allah to inspire us all to act rightly in ways that are pleasing to Allah.

Assalamu alaikum shaikh, I read in a fatwa in which it is written, "The protection of authors’ rights does not mean that it is not allowed to make copies of this work or download it in any format, if the aim of doing so is personal use." In another fatwa I read that "it's permitted, if one copies copyrighted work for personal use without intending to earn money out of them & trade with them." My question is, can I buy photocopy of copyrighted books/journals/reports/alike materials, etc. which is copied without permission of their authors from shop for my gaining knowledge as hobby without any intention to earn money from it or it is regarded as helping the seller in trading these which is forbidden ? I want to know the answer cause I want to develop the hobby of reading. If I am not allowed to do, how I can develop this hobby in lawful way?

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

You are allowed to copy books or materials as long as you have permission to make use of it for personal research and study as stipulated by the owners.

You are not allowed to buy pirated copies sold in the market. For doing so is not at all different from buying stolen goods. We may do well to remember that aiding or abetting or condoning a sin is also a sin.

Therefore, you should always try to borrow such books or materials from libraries – if you cannot afford to buy them.

Assalam u alaicum 1.what is the importance and validity of tasbih in sharia i.e for rizq, sufferings, illness etc. 2. Why it is advised to read tasbih for certain numbers/times i.e 133, 121, 313 times. Regards

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

1- Tasbeeh and istighfar entail tremendous benefits. Together they bring us closer to Allah and bring peace, healing, freedom from worry and grief.

We read in the Qur’an that the Prophet Yunus turned to Allah supplicating as follows:

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

“There is no god but You; glory be to You; verily I am one of those who have wronged their souls.  No sooner he did so, the whale that had swallowed him spit him out and he was saved.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said, “Whoever clings to istighfar, Allah will appoint for him release from all difficulties and provide for him in ways he would never imagine.”

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim lists a hundred benefits for dhikr including the divine help and ease of difficulties and salvation.

Therefore, it behooves us to resort to dhikr as it is a true panacea.

As for the number, it is comparable to dosages of medicine that a physician prescribes for treatments. The Prophet is a spiritual physician and he is inspired by Allah to prescribe specific doses of spiritual immunizations for various spiritual ailments.

We are also told that Allah is One and He loves odd numbers.

Assalamu alaikum shaikh,if any facebook group/other websites/blogs /alike etc contain writings about both lawful & unlawful matters, both halal & haram writings/pictures/videos/animations/graphics/audios/ads/any other type contents, am I permitted to go to these only for lawful things while avoiding unlawful things?

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

You should avoid the social media that publish obscene or unlawful content altogether – if possible. If, however, you are able to isolate the purely halal part and screen out the obscene content, then are allowed to visit it.

In case of doubt, it is best to leave it altogether. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Keep away from the dubious and doubtful for by doing so one is apt to guard against things that are clearly haram; however, if one were to indulge in the doubtful, he or she may end up doing that which is forbidden.”

How do we repent for forcing someone into sin? Are the steps different from those for normal sins? If I repented for all my past sins without thinking about forcing or each and every sin, is that enough?

If you forced someone to sin, you need to make double repentance. You should also ask forgiveness of those you harmed in this way. Furthermore, even as you encouraged them to sin, you should now encourage them to repent and make amends.

As for the details on repentance, please refer to the detailed answer linked below:

Assalamu 'AlaikumI recently participated in a language lesson at university where we translated a newspaper article together which backbit/slandered a certain person. We only had a short extract, from which it was not completely clear what the content of the article would be, but from the title it was possible to make a very good guess. Was it wrong to have participated in this due to the risk of the forbidden? There were only three of us in the class so it would have been very difficult to avoid doing as the teacher came to check on each of us in turn.At the end of the lesson I also audibly agreed when the teacher asked us to translate the part of the extract which we did not get to in class, possibly having forgotten momentarily about what kind of content was in it. Would this be considered encouraging/assisting in sin? If I was at fault, how should I repent for this?

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

If you did transliterate the report given to you in your test, you are not incurring any sin as long as you are not passing it on as a valid piece of information or helping to circulate it.

According to the principles of Islam, a person quoting an infidel without endorsing it is not considered guilty of disbelief. Furthermore, it is also an agreed rule that we are not accountable for actions that are done behind our back without our knowledge or awareness of it.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

Anyhow, you should make istighfar and ask forgiveness of Allah saying: Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or err unwilfully.

Constancy in istighfaar would also act as a means of redemption and expiation.

Assalamu alikum. An example my period started at August 1st then the next one start August 28 again and it goes for 12/15 days. It starts with stain for 2/3 days then began heavy. At this point my question is should I pray at the beginning of first 2/3 days? And the other thing is sometimes my period start with (an exam. August 26 th and the next one I will have October 11th) as it starts with stain then it will go for 10/15 days. Color and thickness is as same as my early age but difference is begain with stain. My question is when should i stop pray and how many days after I start pray again and are there any rule for wudu and ghusl to perform prayer?

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Period can never exceed more than 15 days. Any bleeding that comes after is reckoned as due to istihadah or chronic bleeding. In this case you are to perform ghusl and resume prayer as you would do normally except that you should clean yourself and perform a fresh wudu’ prior to standing up for prayer.

If before this condition occurred you have had a pattern of menses of six or seven days, then you should reckon the same as your period, and the bleeding that follows should be attributed to istihadah unless the bleeding is the same in density and color, etc., as menses; in this case you may do well to  seek the advice of your geneocologist to find out whether the bleeding you are experiencing is of menses or istihadah.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

As for the general rule to follow to determine whether your menses has ended or not you may benefit from the following advice of Umm `Atiyyah, one of the eminent women companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him): “We never paid attention to the brownish stain appearing after expiry of menses.”

For further details, let me cite here one of my earlier answers:

“You are free of menses only when your bleeding has completely stopped, and you see the white discharge, following your regular pattern. However, after you have seen the white discharge, if you experience pinkish or brownish discharges, you need not worry. Umm Atiyyah, the Prophet’s companion, said, ” During the Prophet’s time, we never used to pay attention to the pinkish or brownish discharges that followed the expiry of menses.”  (Reported by Imam Bukhari and others).

All the above, however, is conditional on the fact that your menses period did not exceed fifteen days. For bleeding after fifteen days cannot be reckoned as menses; rather it is reckoned as istihadhah (abnormal bleeding). In the case of istihadhah, you need to pray after having taken a full bath at the end of your period; then you wash your private and make wudhu before each prayer. Washing and wudhu should only be done immediately prior to each salah.

Is it must or obligation for muslim women to do hijab in front of her mahram of other religion cause he is not muslim?

The strict requirements of hijab do not apply to women appearing in front of their close blood relations regardless of whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims. Allah says:

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and to be mindful of their chastity, and not to display their charms [in public] beyond what may [decently] be apparent thereof;  hence, let them draw their head-coverings over their bosoms. And let them not display [more of] their charms to any but their husbands, or their fathers, or their husbands’ fathers, or their sons, or their husbands’ Sons, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their womenfolk, or those whom they rightfully possess, or such male attendants as are beyond all sexual desire,  or children that are as yet unaware of women’s nakedness; and let them not swing their legs [in walking] so as to draw attention to their hidden charms And [always], O you believers – all of you – turn unto God in repentance, so that you might attain to a happy state!.” (An-Nur 24:31)

There is no distinction drawn between Muslims or non-Muslims as far as blood relations are concerned as far as the rules of hijab are concerned.

Assalamualikum. Is there any authentic hadith saying that the dwellers of even the lowermost strata of jannah would be given 72 spouses out of which only 2 are from this world and the rest belongs to jannah? Recently I came across a quote from a hindu guy claiming it to be from Fath ul Baari. Please clarify

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Matters of Ghayb or unseen realties cannot be based on dubious or doubtful or weak traditions. The Qur’an clearly states: No soul can know of the kind of bliss kept in store for them in the hereafter. And the Prophet said, “In the heaven there awaits the believers such bliss the like of which no eyes have seen or ears have heard or no mind could ever conceive or imagine.”

Islam does not require us to believe in the seventy two virgins; if it had  been one of the essentials of Islamic belief, it would have been stated in the Qur’an or the well attested traditions. There is nothing in these sources to that effect.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

We have sufficiency in the Quran and the widely reported and well attested traditions to prove matters of faith.

By going after dubious or weak reports we end up destroying our faith and religion.

So, we are advised to ignore them altogether.

Lastly, let me remind you never to get carried away by the propaganda of those who are simply trying to undermine the faith of the gullible.

Assalamualaikum,I am a muslim woman about to get married to a muslim man. My father has passed away. He was a muslim. He married my mum, a Christian, following Islamic practice. I have a brother, he is muslim. According to my knowledge, my brother can be my wali for my marriage. However, I heard from an ustad in my country, that because my mum is a Christian, their marriage does not count so I can't follow my father's line. Which means, my brother can't be my wali and I have to have a judge as my wali. Is this true? can someone help me to understand the fatwa? Thank you.

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Your brother who is a Muslim can definitely act as your wali. The person who told you otherwise is wrong. He is also wrong in saying that your father’s marriage with your Christian mother is not deemed as valid. The marriage is perfectly valid as stated in the Qur’an: See for instance:

“Today, all the good things of life have been made lawful to you. And the food of those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime is lawful to you,  and your food is lawful to them. And [lawful to you are], in wedlock, women from among those who believe [in this divine writ], and, in wedlock, women from among those who have been vouchsafed revelation before your time -provided that you give them their dowers, taking them in honest wedlock, not in fornication, nor as secret love-companions.  But as for him who rejects belief [in God] – in vain will be all his works: for in the life to come he shall be among the lost.” (Al-Ma’idah : 5: 5).

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

So, you need not feel any inhibition in asking your brother to act as your wali.

Before concluding, it is important for us to know that we are not allowed to speak on matters of religion without proper knowledge. By doing so, we may incur a great sin akin to associating partners with it – as Imam Ibn al-Qayyim has rightly said.

What is the cure of black magic? I hope to get your positive response and help.JazakAllah khayran kaseera

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Your best protection and immunity against black magic is by empowering yourself through practicing Islam, reading the Qur’an and consistency in Dhikr and Du`aa.

Allah has promised the faithful that devils cannot exercise permanent control over those servants of Allah who have submitted to Him; Satan can exercise permanent control only over those who acquiesce and surrender themselves to his authority. “Most certainly, My servants–you cannot exercise control over them except those who are deviant who follow you.” (Q. 15: 42) “Most certainly he (Satan) has no power over those who truly cherish faith and are trusting upon their Lord; rather his power is limited only to those who take him as a protector (beside God) and thus associate partners with Him” (Q. 16: 99-100).

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

The first and foremost requirement is to believe firmly that no one, however great his powers may be, can benefit or harm you except if Allah wills it. The Qur’an reminds us repeatedly that a true believer must believe firmly that Allah alone is the one who can give us benefit or harm in an absolute sense; everything that befalls us from humans or other creatures are only secondary and are achieved only through the power derived from Allah; so the best remedy and cure is to continuously seek protection and refuge in Allah. Satan and all of his tricks and weapons could be defeated and rendered utterly ineffective if Allah.

I give below a number of selections of verses of the Qur’an and dua’s which you can recite on a regular basis:

1) Fatihah

2) Last three chapters of the Qur’an (i.e. Q. 112, 113, 114)

3) Ayat al-kursi (i.e. Q.2: 255)

Besides the above, repeat the following Du’as on a regular basis both in the morning and evening three times or more:

1) bismillaahi alladhee laa yadhurru ma’ ismihi sha’un fi al-ardhi wa laa fi al-ssamaa’i wa huwa al-ssamee’u al-a’aleem

(In the name of Allah; with His name, nothing whatsoever on earth or heaven can inflict any harm; He is all-Hearing and all-Knowing).

2) hasbiya Allaahu laa ilaaha illaa huwa alayhi tawakkaltu wahuwa rabbu al-‘arshi al-azeem

(Allah suffices me; there is no god but He; in Him I place my sole trust; He is the Lord of the mighty Throne.)

3) Allaahumma inee a’duhu bika min hamazaati al-shayaateen wa a’oodhu bika rabbi an yahduroon

(O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the whisperings of Satan; my Lord, I seek refuge in You from their presence around me.).

4) A’oodhu bi ‘izzati Allaahi wa qudratihi mimma ajidu wa uhaadhiru

(I seek refuge in Allah’s glory and power from the affliction and pain I experience and suffer from).

It is important to remember that Du’a and Dhikr will only benefit when it comes from a heart that firmly believes in Allah, and thus cherishes firm conviction in Allah’s power and sovereignty.

Allah Almighty knows best.

Assalamu alaikum shaikh,is it must that, women 's outer garments such as burkha/jilbab/alike loose fitting dress & skirts long up to ankle, white apron long up to thigh, coat/overcoat long up to thigh etc which women wear as hijab should be two or three sizes bigger than her actual body sizes or is it enough that those dresses won't adhere to her body tightly & will be normally loose?

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

It is wrong to say that Islam enforces a particular type of dress such as burkha or jilbab, etc. she is allowed to wear any type of dress as long as she dresses modestly while not exposing the parts of her body that should not be exposed in public.

For further details on this, let me cite her one of my earlier answers:

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

“It is important to remember that the purpose of hijab in Islam is not to cut out women from participating in the activities of the society or to keep men and women utterly segregated or to make it hard for her to function normally in life. Rather the purpose of hijab is to help woman maintain her dignity and honour as a free person and help her fulfil her obligations smoothly and comfortably.

So the requirements of hijab are never oppressive or restrictive in any way; here are the requisites of hijab or proper Islamic attire for women:
1) It should be covering her whole body except face and hands;
2) It should be loose fitting;
3) It should not transparent nor revealing;
4) It should not be an attire specifically worn by men only.
So long as your attire fulfils the above conditions, you don’t have to worry. Remember Allah has not revealed religion to make life difficult; rather it is intended to make it easy and comfortable for us. Allah says, “He has not laid upon you in religion any hardship” (Al-Hajj 22: 78). “Allah wishes to lighten the burden for you; for certainly man/woman has been created weak!” (An-Nisaa’ 4: 28)

Assalamu Alaikum, I have been married for over 18 years and have two kids. We married with love and we still love each other, we have our ups and downs. Now my husband wants me to get divorce but stay living together. He says it's just a paper and this will prove my love to him. Please help me letting him understand that this is wrong and he should not destroyed marriage. Jazakum Allah Kheiran

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

He is not allowed to do that. There is no distinction between the two types of divorce: legal and non-legal. If he divorces you legally, it is considered a valid divorce. He is not allowed to cohabit with you after having done so.

It seems to me that he is trying to cheat the system for some personal or selfish reasons.  Islam does not condone cheating or treason. He is wrong in telling you that you should show your love by helping him to cheat or break the law. If you were to do so, you  would also be a partner in the sin.

SalamoAlaikum,They say that we must not do any sajood after the asar prayer, before the sun set. So as per my understanding, if I miss out my Duhar prayer, I should offer Qada before offering the Asr prayer. What if I miss out Asr prayer, should I offer Qada before maghrib or after magrib prayer? And why?

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Scholars are divided on the issue of performing optional prayers or prostrations such as sujud al-tilawah after Asr as well in other forbidden times.

According to Hanafi and Hanbali Schools, no optional prostrations are allowed after `Asr. Malikites, however, allow for prostrations after Fajr until close to sunrise, as well as after `Asr until the sun’s rays turn yellow.

Ads by Muslim Ad Network

As for the Shafi`i school, they allow for prostrations and optional prayers with reasons. This view is also authenticated by some of the prominent Hanbali scholars as well.

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim states:

“The hadith prohibiting salah in the forbidden times is a general one; it has been qualified by the following: `Asr prayer according to consensus; making up the past salah one has missed, neglected or forgotten, as well as prayers associated with particular occasions or reasons: This includes making up the sunnahs one  has missed since the prophet made up for the sunnah of Zhuhr after `Asr, and he also approved someone making up for the sunnah of Fajr he missed after Fajr…”

In light of this, you are allowed to make up the obligatory or strongly recommended prayers you have missed after `Asr.

So my sister-in-law saw a dream about me yesterday.. She said that a man came to her and my brother.. He said that my wife has died and she has sent me to convey her message that your sister (me) should die or when she dies, Allah will be easy with her during her hissab kitaam which is like judgment i guess. Then my brother started fighting with him that why are you here etc etc.. I heard about this and i just was really curious about it because I'm not really a very good Muslim.. I sometimes miss prayers but everyday I'm trying my best to become better. So what does tjos dream mean? Should i be worried because I've heard that the meaning of dreams are opposite to what it may seem?

We are not allowed to make judgements as to the destiny of people in the next world based on such dreams. Such judgments are the sole privilege of Allah.  Therefore, we must never infer from dreams that someone can get away from the judgment of Allah.

So, I would urge you not to pay attention to such dreams. You ought to worry about your own fate and work to save yourself from hellfire: Remember there is no salvation without establishing prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) told his beloved daughter Fathimah: “Fathimah, save yourself from hellfire; I cannot save you.”

As for the sound Islamic perspective on dreams, let me cite here my earlier answer:

“Dreams, as we can safely infer from the Islamic sources, are of three types: The first of these is termed mubasshiraat, which are sound dreams that are indicative of glad tidings. They result from angelic inspirations or suggestions cast by Allah in our consciousness. Referring to such dreams, the Prophet (peace be on him) said: “Nothing of the prophecy remains now (i.e. after his own call to prophethood) except sound visions, which are bestowed on a righteous believer, and it constitutes one thirtieth of prophecy.”

This type of dream can include premonitions or intimations of things that might happen in the future. For instance a believer may experience a vision about his own imminent death, or some future events to occur, or receive some confirmation of his spiritual states, or even reminders/admonitions about his omissions or commissions. These may include visions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) or other prophets and communications with them, or visions of symbols of Islam such as the Ka’bah or the Prophet’s mosque, etc.

A second type of dream is the result of satanic whisperings or inspirations. Satan, the avowed enemy of man, is ever- present with us and he sees us in ways that we do not see him. Unless we take proper safeguards against him and such inspirations, he may trap us in his nets. He inspires in us all kinds of thoughts and suggestions, both in conscious and unconscious states. A person may be predisposed to such satanic visions and inspirations if he is constantly exposed to sights, sounds and thoughts that are obscene or filthy.

A third type of dream can be termed as ‘idle dreams’, and they are due to the impact of unpalatable foods, or the over- exercise of one’s imaginations, or experiences in life which might also be reflected in one’s dreams.

A person experiencing a good vision is encouraged to share it with others—especially with those who are trustworthy and God-fearing; but if he/she experiences a bad dream, he/she is advised against disclosing it to anyone. In the latter case, immediately after experiencing such a dream, he/she is recommended to change the sleeping position, and seek refuge and protection in Allah by saying the following supplication:

Bismillaahi alladhee laa yazurru ma’ ismihi shay’un fi al-ardhi wa laaa fi al-samaa’ wahuwa al-ssamee’ul aleem

(In the name of Allah; with His name nothing whatsoever on earth or heaven can do any harm; He is the all-Hearing, and the all-Knowing).

Referring to this, the Prophet (peace be on him) said, “thus he/she will be spared of any possible harm.”

While the first type of dream (i.e. mubasshiraat) is what every believer should seek and strive for, he/she must surely guard against the second type of dream.

The surest way to block Satanic inspirations and whisperings is by taking refuge in Allah and through cultivating the habit of consistency in dhikr, right thinking, right living and right conduct. It is, therefore, highly recommended to go to bed in a state of purity, after having recited portions of the Qur’an (such as the surahs of Fatihah, Ikhlaas, Falaq and al-Nnas as well as Aayat al-Kursi), and to immerse oneself in dhikr and salah (i.e. saying blessings and sending salutations) on the Prophet (peace be on him) before one lapses into a state of sound sleep.”

Assalamualaikum my dear scholars, Here most of us follow Hanafi Madhab. In witr Salat of esha we pray 3 raqat. After 2 raqat we sit for Tasahud and then stand up for 3rd raqat. In 3rd raqat we pray Sura Fatiha, Sura Iklas and then give Taqbir (Allahu Akbar) and then recite Duya e kunut, then go to ruku, sejhda and recite tasahud, durud duya masura and then salam and this way end witr salat. But i have seen that there is no proof Rasullah saying witar salat in this way. So are we Bangladeshis are reading witr salat in totally wrong way. Plz let me know what is the correct way to read witr salat as per Hanafi Madhab by showing proof so that i can educate others as well.

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

We are allowed to pray witr according to the method of any of the authentic schools of jurisprudence: Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi or Hanbali. The differences in such matters are insignificant and have no bearing on the essential integrals of prayer.

For details, let me cite here one of my earlier answers:

Witr can be performed in a number of ways such as the following:

1) Three rak’ahs with one salaam exactly as we perform the Maghrib Prayer; which has been the format followed by the Hanafi School. They have based this on a hadith reported by ‘Aishah, the mother of the faithful, “The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to perform witr by praying three rak’ahs, saying salaam only upon finishing (the entire three rak’ahs).” (Reported by Muslim). As a further evidence they cite a statement of Abu al-‘aliyah, “The Prophet’s companions taught us to pray witr exactly as we perform Maghrib Prayer, since the former is witr of the night, and the latter is witr of the day.”

2) Three rak’ahs with just one salaam at the end but unlike Maghrib one would skip the sitting after the two rak’ahs. This format of witr is considered acceptable, according to both Shafi and Hanbali schools. They have relied on a report from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he used to pray witr without sitting in between– except in the last rak’ah.” (Reported by al-Nasai and Hakim);

3) Three rak’ahs are to be offered, but they are split into two parts; salaam is said after the first two rak’ahs, then following a slight pause, one stands up and prays another rak’ah followed by salaam. This is the format most preferred by the Maliki School and they consider it undesirable to do the other way except when one is following an Imam who adopts any of the other formats. They have based their opinion on a report from Ibn Umar that the Prophet peace be upon him, used to separate witr into two parts: two rak’ahs, followed by a single rak’ah, saying salaam after praying the two rak’ahs ( as well as after the third).” (Reported by Ahmad).

4) Praying more than three rak’ahs (i.e. five, seven, etc.), which has also been considered as permissible, according to Shafi and Hanbali schools. In their support they cite a number of traditions from the Prophet, peace be upon him, indicating the permissibility of doing the same.

As for the question, whether one can perform one rak’ah of witr all by itself, the scholarly opinion is divided on this issue.

According to both Shafi and Hanbali schools, one may perform one rak’ah of witr without incurring sin. It is not at all considered even as undesirable (makruh). This position of theirs is based on an authentic report from the Prophet, peace be upon him, “The (optional) night Prayer should be said in two’s and two’s; if you fear that dawn is approaching, finish it by praying witr, even if it be one rak’ah.” (Reported jointly by Bukhari and Muslim.)

However, according to both the Hanafi and Maliki Schools—also endorsed by some scholars of the Hanbali School– praying one rak’ah of witr is considered as undesirable. However—they insist—that one must do so, if he were to pray behind an Imam who has chosen to follow that format.

In light of the above discussion, it is reasonable to conclude that there is more than one valid way of performing witr. The Imams or schools who have opted for one of the formats or another have not done so based on their whims or caprices but in strict conformity with the transmissions handed down to them from the Prophet or his companions. If the Prophet, peace be upon him, had wanted the Ummah to rigidly follow a single format of witr, he would certainly have said so clearly and unambiguously, in which case the Ummah would have no choice but to stick to it. As it was not the case, we find the above divergence of opinion. We may reflect on Imam Malik’s comment to one of the caliphs who wanted to enforce a single school of Fiqh on the Ummah, “Don’t attempt to do that, for the Companions have dispersed in the lands, each one of them carrying with them an aspect or aspects of the Sunnah.”

Assalamu Alaikum,If a person dies as a believer, does it guarantee that he will not be punished? And if a person had faith at some point during his life time but dies as a disbeliever, does it mean he will be saved from hell fire though he will be punished for a while? Who are the people who are punished in hell only for a short while? Thanks

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Allah alone is the judge and He alone has the right to send people to heaven or hell. All that we can say based on the revealed texts are the following:

1- There is no salvation for someone who dies in a state of disbelief in the existence and Oneness of Allah.

2- Those who die in a state of self-surrender to Allah having done good works will be saved. Those who are guilty of major sins and have repented before death will not be punished; otherwise, Allah may choose to punish them, although eventually they will be taken out of hellfire and admitted to paradise.

3- As for those who renounced their faith before death will be consigned to hell fire.

We are not to speculate further on such matters. Rather we must refer the matter to Allah while recognizing that our knowledge of the unseen realities is limited. The true reality of such matters will be revealed to us only in the next life.

As believers we ought to say: We believe in what Allah has revealed without indulging in idle speculations.

Salaam, I have 2 questions 1.How one can make tayammum while in the hospital 2. Is it permissible to address a priest as father and a nun as sister

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Let me answer your question in their respective order:

1- Tayammum is a symbolic substitute when we cannot use water for ablutions: Allah says in the Quran:

“O you who believe! When you are about to pray, wash your face, and your hands and arms up to the elbows, and pass your [wet] hands lightly over your head, and [wash] your feet up to the ankles. And if you are in a state. requiring total ablution, purify yourselves.  But if you are ill, or are travelling, or have just satisfied a want of nature, or have cohabited with a woman, and can find no water-then take resort to pure dust, passing therewith lightly over your face and your hands. God does not want to impose any hardship on you, but wants to make you pure, and to bestow upon you the full measure of His blessings, so that you might have cause to be grateful.” (Al-Ma`idah 5:6)

We can infer the following from the above verse:

1- We are to use water for purification – unless we are prevented from using it because of ill-health, unavailability of water, etc.

2- In the latter case, we are to perform tayammum or symbolic ablution.

3- Tayammum entails striking the earth with both hands once and then wiping  over face and hands once (after blowing away any dust sticking to the hands before wiping)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) told `Ammar b. Yasir who rolled over the mud: “It would have been enough for you to strike (a clean) ground once with your hands and then wipe your face and hands with it.”

In another narration, we are told that the Prophet ordered to blow away any dust sticking on the hands before wiping the face and hands.

It is clear from the above that the intent of tayammum is not to smear our hands and face with dust. Rather, it is merely a symbolic substitute to reinforce the idea of ablution as a prerequisite before standing up for prayer.

Now the question arises how could one perform tayammum in the hospital: The answer is: Ideally, one should get a few grains of sand or clean dry earth or a rock piece to strike on and perform tayammum. In case nothing of the above is available, then he or she may strike on the bed or wall and perform tayammum as mentioned above. Allah says: “Fear Allah as best as you can.” (At-Taghabun 64:16)

2- There is no objection in addressing religious officials of other religions by their official titles: We know that the Prophet referred to the religious officials of Jews and Christians by their titles.

By doing so, we are simply observing the proper etiquette of conversations; it does not in any way involve compromising our own religious identity or principles. Even as we expect them to address our religious officials such as imams or shaikhs by their titles, we should reciprocate the same.

Finally, it is important to point out that Islam encouraged civility and observance of acceptable social decorum in social interactions.
