Traditional bank are riba-based institutions. According to an authentic narration, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who consumes usury, the one who pays it, the one who writes down such a usurious contract, and those who witness it. This hadith clearly declares the prohibition of assuming any job that has a relation with such usurious activities whether in banks or any other institutions.

 

A large number of scholar, therefore, maintain that it is prohibited to have any job in traditional banks (not even as a car driver or an office boy), because they are usury-based institutions and their main income is based on usury.

 

A group of scholars, however, maintains that if one avoids direct contact with usurious contracts and his job has no relevance to usurious transactions of the bank, he may have this job, because he will then get his salary for a permissible job.

 

But, in response to this argument, the first group of scholars can say that without the help of such persons, the bank will not be able to run its activities smoothly.

 

In other words, these jobs, though permissible in principle, have become integral part of the bank and facilitate its flourishing and development.

 

Allah Almighty says, “And you shall help one another to virtuousness, and to the fear of God. But you shall not help one another to sin and to aggression.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:2)

 

Basically a woman should remain at home as indicated by the Quranic injection “And abide reverently in your homes. Nor shall you flaunt your beauty and adornment, like the flaunting of [women in] the former times of ignorance. Rather, [duly] establish the Prayer. And give the Zakât-Charity. And obey [the commandments of] Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends [by this] only to remove all [traces of] defilement from you, O People of the [Prophet’s] Household, and to purify you [in spirit] with [a virtuous] purification.” (Al-Ahzab 33:33)

Though this injunction is directed to the wives of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), all Muslim women are included a fortiori, since Prophet’s wives are role examples for them. Besides, of course, Allah intends to remove traces of defilement from all Muslims and to purify their spirits. However, a Muslim woman may go out to work under the following regulations:

 

1- She has to be in need for the job in order to earn her livelihood. Or, if she is not need, there should be a need in the society for her profession and thus she may work for the public interest.

 

2- The job should be suitable for her physical and psychological nature.

 

3- She has to observe the Islamic code of conduct and dress for a Muslim woman.

 

4- There should be no intermingling with men as far as possible. But, if necessary, it has to be within a very limited scope; and the Islamic code of conduct and dress for a Muslim woman must be observed.

 

5- The job should not require her to travel without a mahram (non-marriageable relative).

 

6- The job should not distract a woman from taking care of her household or fulfilling her family duties.

Hello sheikh.I am from Ghana.I need further explanations on an issue.I learnt telling lies is haram in Islam but when a person tell lies with the purpose to repair a broken marriage and he/she succeed in doing that, does it mean those lies becomes halal and if so,can a person also visit the soothsayer or fortuneteller in the name of repairing a broken marriage or anything else? Thank you.

Telling lies is totally prohibited. However, one may tell lies to reconcile people’s affairs and end disputes. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “A person who [lies] in order to conciliate between people is not a liar, when he conveys good [messages] or says [something] good.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

 

There are some scholars, however, who interpret this hadith to mean using figures of speech and double entendre, not sheer lying. Even if we go with the first interpretation, telling lies in this case involves the achievement of a great benefit and interest that outweighs the evil of telling lies.

 

In fact, usually telling lies in such situations of reconciling between disputing parties rarely involve any evil.

 

On the other hand, going to soothsayers can never be justified under any pretext. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade Muslims from going to the fortunetellers.

 

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whosoever goes to a soothsayer or fortuneteller and believes in him, he thus disbelieves in what is revealed upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).” [Ahmad]Therefore, one has to avoid going to fortunetellers, because this might lead to believing in them or supporting them in their falsehood. These soothsays and fortunetellers claim that they know of the realm of the Unseen, which is only know to Allah, the Exalted.

Assalamualykum, i am a female officer of defence service. During the time of Firing practice i dont found any place to perform my salat. My question is " if i do KOSOR salat in the firing range by sitting position will it be correct"???? There is no place for a woman to perform salat & not possible to go home for salat. Zajakallahu khairan

Shortening prayers is allowable only while travelling. So, if you travel for this firing practice, you may shorten four-rak`ah prayers to two-rak`ahs. But if you do not travel for this practice, you may not shorten prayers.

 

However, in a situation like yours, you may combine Zhuhr and Asr prayers either at the time of the former or the time of the latter and may also combine Maghrib and Isha either at the time of the former or the time of the latter.

 

This should give you a wide range of time and allow you to defer prayer until you find a suitable time and place. If there is no chance to stand up, you may perform prayer while sitting down.

Finally, let me advise you, sister, to find another job that is more suitable for you.

Hello, I was wondering if it’s shirk if we accidentally name someone other than Allah during Salat. If someone had asked for Muhammad’s intercession in salat and then realized you should only ask Allah to allow for Muhammad to intercede for us is that shirk? Thanks

It is not clear what you mean by “accidentally name someone other than Allah during Salat.”

 

As for asking for Prophet Muhammad’s intercession, this may take either of two forms:

 

1- If one asks Allah, the Exalted, to allow Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to intercede for him in the Hereafter, there is nothing wrong in that.

 

2- If one asks Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to intercede for him with Allah Almighty to bring benefit or avert harm, this is prohibited. A group of scholars even considers this supplication a form of shirk, for a person here asks Prophet Muhammad for something he cannot do, since he is already dead. The Companions of Prophet Muhammad used to ask him to pray for them while he was alive; but never asked him to do that after his death.

Assalamu Alykum, Me and my children have difference of opinion on Istikharah. Please clarify. Is it permissible to do Istikharah on who should come to my house or I can visit them or not, because I don't know who could be harmful to my family or not. Jazak Allahu Khairan

A Muslim is recommended to perform istikharah Prayer whenever he/she intends to do something of concern. Imam al-Bukhari reported on the authority of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us istikharah as he would teach us a surah from the Quran.”

The formula of istikharah supplication intends to show one’s submission to and trust in Allah as well as one’s renouncement of power and knowledge to Him.

 

Inviting people to one’s house is a good way to come closer to them and tighten relations. But, on the other hand, there are people whom one should not invite to his house as they may affect him or his family negatively.

 

So, if one is in doubt about a certain person whether to invite him to his house of not, one may perform istikharah Prayer asking Allah to choose the best for him, whether to invite him or not.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) exhorted Muslims to observe supplication while prostrating saying, “A servant [of Allah] is nearest to his Lord while prostrating. So, supplicate as much as you can [while prostrating].”

 

He also pointed out that supplication is more worthy of acceptance while prostrating saying, “Exert yourself in supplication while prostrating; for that is worthy of being accepted.” (Muslim)

 

Therefore, a Muslim should observe supplication while prostrating in any obligatory or voluntary prayer.

Salam can a Muslim man take care of Christian orphan

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “He who takes care of an orphan, whether he is his relative or a stranger, will be in Jannah with me like these two”; the narrator, Malik ibn Anas raised his forefinger and middle finger.

 

He also said, “There is a reward for serving any animate [living being].” The generality of these prophetic statements signifies their extension to all human beings, regardless of religion.

 

Therefore, a Muslim may take care of non-Muslim orphans; but he should have the intention of inviting them to Islam.

Are we allowed to volunteer for a group helping refugees if it is run by Hindus?

As long as the work you will volunteer to do is permissible, you may do it, even if it is run by non-Muslims.

 

In fact, being a volunteer gives you more freedom to abstain from doing whatever you may have doubt about. A Muslim may- even should- help others to kindness and charitable deeds as the gracious Quran enjoins, “You shall help one another to virtuousness, and to the fear of God. But you shall not help one another to sin and to aggression.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:2)

If there is some impurity on my chest and I pour some water over it and then the water runs down my thighs and legs after touching the impurity do my thighs and legs become impure

If the water carries or has been changed (in terms of color, taste or smell) by the impurity, then it has become impure and needs to be removed from any part of your body or clothes it has run over.

 

If none of the water qualities (color, taste or smell) has been changed, the water remains pure, according to most preponderant opinion.
