Menstruated before Finishing `Umrah: What to Do?

03 September, 2016
Q As-salamu `alaykum. We live in Jeddah and we went to `Umrah. When we reached Makkah suddenly, I got menses (unexpectedly). I didn’t perform `Umrah while my family did and we came back. Now we have to go to India for vacation. What should I do now? It will be very difficult for me to stay in ihram for such a long time. I came to know that a goat has to be sacrificed. Can my father do this in my absence or is there any other way? Please, help me. Jazaka Allah khayran.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear sister, thank you for trusting. We highly appreciate your question that shows your eagerness to perform `Umrah.

In your case, you can free yourself from ihram, offer a sacrifice, and compensate for this `Umrah later.

You are allowed to free yourself from ihram since it is no fault of your own. You should offer a sacrifice, according to the ruling of Imam Abu Hanifah. Your father can do it on your behalf.

According to Imam Malik, sacrifice is not needed in your case, since it was not because of your fault. However, if you are a strict follower of the Hanafi School, you are advised to offer the sacrifice.

You should also perform another `Umrah to compensate for the one you have missed, if you are able to do so.

Allah Almighty knows best.
