Mufti

Answer

Wiping Over Thin Socks

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu waRahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

If the socks are thin, it is not allowed to wipe over them.

Answering your question, the late Saudi scholar, Sheikh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him) stated:

One of the conditions of wiping over socks is that the socks must be thick and concealing. If they are thin and translucent, it is not allowed to wipe over them. This is because, in that case, the foot is considered uncovered.

Almighty Allah knows best.
