Does Being Barren Preclude a Girl from Marriage?

10 April, 2019
Q As-salamu `alaykum. Actually my question is regarding marrying a girl who can’t give birth. The girl whom I was planning to marry had some horrible incidents and doctors informed her parents that after surgery she will survive but she will be unable to give birth.

So, as far as I know, Islam teaches us to marry women who are able to give birth of more number of children. What should I do? Shall I marry that girl or leave her?? Please, reply me as soon as possible.

Thanks. May Allah bless us with good deeds. Thanks.

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Islam calls for marrying a woman who is able and expected to give birth. However, that is not a must. So, marrying a woman who is unable to give birth is not prohibited.

In responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

Although it is highly recommended to marry a spouse who is potentially able to give birth, it is permissible to marry a spouse who is barren or unable to give birth.

As you know, most of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were widows, and they did not give him any offspring. Only Khadijah and Mariyah gave him children.

Therefore, you may marry this girl, even if she is not able to give you children.

Almighty Allah knows best.
