Can I Practice Pyrography?

12 December, 2016
Q As-Salamu alaykum. I practice pyrography (the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object). Is it OK to write in such way a surah from the Qur'an on the wooden table? Jazakumullah khayran.

Answer

I don’t see anything wrong in inscribing the Qur’anic verses or surahs on wooden pieces or tables as long as there is no desecration involved.

According to the principles of jurisprudence, actions are judged by their precise intents and purposes. Arts including calligraphy and painting are media; a medium in itself is neutral as is the case with writing and poetry, etc. If arts are used for a good purpose, they are deemed good. If, however, they are done for spreading corruption, they are forbidden.

Since inscribing the Qur’an cannot be deemed as bad in any way, it shall be considered as permissible or even recommended as long as there is no desecration or irreverence involved. The latter would certainly be the case if it is intended for people to step on it or to be placed in washrooms or places that are not befitting the Noble Word of Allah, the most Exalted and Glorious. I pray to Allah to inspire us to reverence His Word.

Allah Almighty knows best.
