How to Tell My Wife I’m Depressed?

22 January, 2017
Q I have been having mental issues after I lost my job a few years ago. I feel useless and worthless because I cannot provide for my family. Instead of telling my wife the truth, my answer to how are you doing is always fine. What is the best way to tell her the truth that I am depressed and fight bad thoughts many times a week?

Answer

Answer:

Salam ‘Aleikom,

Thank you for sharing your question, brother. It is totally understandable that you don’t feel your sense of purpose is fulfilled, especially when you cannot provide for your family. This tends to be a very deep need for many men, to really feel accomplished and to feel their bring value to their family’s life by providing for them.

So, this is a natural response that you are carrying, and I can totally understand how you could feel low and sad about this. May Allah (swt) open the doors for you for provision. You just keep it up, have trust in Allah (swt), and something will open up soon….
