Should I Change My Baby’s Name?

02 February, 2018
Q As-salamu `alaykum I have a named my son M. Simar after looking at one of the books of Muslim names for babies. However, later I found that such a name is not present in other such books. Should I change his name or should I continue with that name. Moreover, I came to know that "Simar" is a man who killed Imam Hussein. Should I change his name?

Answer

In this counseling answer:

“Names become a reflection of the values that one wants to imbue the child with as an apart of their character while growing up. It is also important to be able to pronounce the name correctly in order to convey the right meaning. In terms of choosing names, Prophet Muhammad advised”

As-salamu alaykum Brother,

We pray that Allah keeps you as a protector for your first child and bless you with more in sha’all.

The name that you raise as a concern of yours is not familiar to me at all, and perhaps requires a linguistic in Semetic languages to guide you more accurately. What I have come across is that the name “Simar” is used amongst Hindu’s, Shi`as and Seikhs alike, and is used by information systems as a brand name. The name is also used in Catholicism deriving from the word “zimarra” referring to a cassock (cloak) that is worn by bishops since the 18th/19th century. It is also used as slang in the Punjab region as a derogatory term.

On another level according to the Open Encyclopedia, simar derived from the word “simran”, used when referring to the vocal repetition/recital of God’s names from the holy text of the Sikh which also means meditation in remembrance, and to kill one’s ego in order to achieve union with God.

To those who choose to live in remembrance of Allah (SWT), choosing names that show servitude to another other than Allah (SWT) is disliked as much as bad that carry bad omens, incites mockery, violence, vanity or ugliness.

Names become a reflection of the values that one wants to imbue the child with as an apart of their character while growing up. It is also important to be able to pronounce the name correctly in order to convey the right meaning. In terms of choosing names, Prophet Muhammad advised:

…names declaring ones piety” (Bukhari 8: 2112)

“Name yourself with my name, but do not name yourselves with my kunya [i.e. Abdul Qasim]” (Bukhari 1: 110)
