Counselor

Answer

In this counseling answer:

The counselor advises the questioner to read a little Quran daily as a habit, try reading it out loud.  Just read and enjoy and let your baby see how much pleasure you get from it. If your baby wants to see what you are doing, let him/her. Eventually, your baby will be old enough to understand easy stories; there are many to choose from. Read Muslim stories to your baby. Stories about the prophets, good manners, etc…Give your baby a lot of attention and praise when he/she is “good”.

As-salam `Alaykum,

I would start out by really putting an effort forth to live Islam. By that I mean, set the stage now. Your baby will absorb his or her environment. Just as babies pick up the language that is spoken in the home, they also pick up the attitude and the way of life.

Arrange your daily schedule around your prayers. This way, your baby will see you praying. Eventually, your baby will want to copy you. In a couple of months, your baby will want to crawl all over you, if she/he is not doing so already. That is ok, Allah is most Merciful. Just pray and gently set your baby next to you each time he or she crawls on you during your prayer. As soon as your baby can walk, your baby will want to copy you… they are really cute at this stage.

If you read a little Quran daily as a habit, try reading it out loud. Don’t try to get your baby to listen; just read and enjoy and let your baby see how much pleasure you get from it.

Your baby will have a core personality that he or she is already born with. Extrovert or introvert, etc., so go with it and try to find out what his or her strengths are and emphasize those. Then relax and enjoy; these days go by really, really fast.

One day at a time, and remember to ask Allah for help.
