What is the Value of Tawhid (Monotheism)? Part 4

28 April, 2016
Q I have never understood the need for or value that Islam places on tawhid, or the scriptural basis for it. I believe that Muslims have expended considerable time and energy on defining an undefinable God in very specific ways. It is my opinion that all that time and effort was is wasted because it is not relevant to monotheism and the worship of the personal creator deity. Ultimately there is only one understanding of God - He is the creator of all things. All else that we know is through revelation, through The Word made flesh. Were it not for Jesus we would not know God. IMHO tawhid is meaningless, it teaches us nothing. So what in your view is the value of tawhid?

Salam (Peace) Dear Brother,

Thank you so much for sending us your message, and for posing your questions respectfully.

This is the last part of your question.

We appreciate and respect your query. We urge you to further enrich yourself with knowledge. Investigate the bible deeply. Please spend time carefully reading the bible. The original bible, if you found it, not a translation.  Also find the work of former priest and fellow writer, Idris Tawfiq about his research in the subject. You may also find the work of Yusuf Estes interesting, if you want to look him up.

We ask you to investigate the Quran. Read it from cover to cover. You will not lose anything, you’ll only gain more insights and be a more informed human being.

In addition, we also recommend you reading “The Bible, The Quran and Science” “La Bible, Le Coran et La Science” The Holy Scriptures Examined In The Light Of Modern Knowledge” by Dr. Maurice Bucaille. It is a very thought-provoking read.

We ask the Creator to shower you with peace, wisdom, insight and satisfaction. Ameen.

Verses about Jesus in the Quran

{[Jesus] said, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive. And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant. And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive.” That is Jesus, the son of Mary – the word of truth about which they are in dispute. It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is. [Jesus said], “And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.”}  (Quran 19: 30-36)

{And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, “O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad.” But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, “This is obvious magic.”And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah untruth while he is being invited to Islam. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.} (Quran 61: 6-7)

{And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, “O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'” He will say, “Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.I said not to them except what You commanded me – to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness. If You should punish them – indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them – indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.Allah will say, “This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness.” For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment. To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is within them. And He is over all things competent.} (Quran 5: 116- 120)What is the Value of Tawhid

{[Mention] when Allah said, “O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ. And as for those who disbelieved, I will punish them with a severe punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.”But as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards, and Allah does not like the wrongdoers. This is what We recite to you, [O Muhammad], of [Our] verses and the precise [and wise] message.Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, “Be,” and he was.The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters. Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you – say, “Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars [among us].”} (Quran 3: 55- 61)

I hope this helps answer your question.

Salam and please keep in touch.
