Studying Alone with a Male Colleague: Allowed?

02 November, 2016
Q Can I meet with my male colleague privately or in a closed area in the university to revise our course materials?

Answer

Assalamu Alaykum Dear Sister,

Thank you so much for your question and for your interest in knowing about the most pure way to carry out all your life matters.

With regards to your question, you can remember the following hadith.

Ibn ‘Umar narrated:

“Behold! A man is not alone with a woman but the third of them is Ash-Shaitan.” [Jami’ at-Tirmidhi]

So this shows that the setting you mentioned is not one that is 100% right, pure or pleasing to Allah Almighty.

So, accordingly, try not to be alone with a male colleague.

To avoid that, you can aim to revise the materials with any of your female colleagues, or try to be in a large group and avoid closed rooms or private areas. This is the most pure way.

And there are several ways to work on your course materials without doing any unlawful or impure act.

Always remember:

“… And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out
And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.” (Quran 65: 2- 3)

Hope this answers your question.

Salam and please keep in touch.
