How to Face A Trump Presidency Without Losing Faith? Part 1

31 January, 2017
Q I feel like I am getting farther from Allah now that the average American feels free to be openly bigoted toward Muslims in America because Trump is. It makes me so depressed and that makes me feel far from Allah. How can I face this Trump presidency without losing my faith?

Answer

Salam Alaykum Dear brother,

Please find part one of the answer to your question below. Find the second and final part at the link here.

I wanted to share the following verses for your contemplation before we start discussing the answer.

{Those to whom hypocrites said, “Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.” But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, “Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.”

So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.

That is only Satan who frightens [you] of his supporters. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers.} (Quran 3:173-175)

These verses talk about those who when they were told that others were plotting against them and will gather their forces against them, instead of fearing, they only increased in faith!

They remembered who their God is, The All-Powerful, The One in Control. So, they increased in faith, trust, and commitment to Him. And when they sincerely proved their faith, they received His aid and bounty.

This whole situation could be resolved in a second by the All-Powerful, but He only places the believers in these situations to test their sincerity and test their true faith.

And this is when their relationship with Allah should strengthen. This is when believers and their true belief should shine, as Allah tells us:

{Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast?} (Quran 3:142)

Brother, remember that the situation you’re describing is not new.

Believers have faced similar circumstances repeatedly; and we know that from our deen (path in life, religion), and from the Quran and Sunnah.

Imagine if Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) and his followers felt weakened and far away from Allah when they were a prosecuted minority fought against by their own people.

Imagine if Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and his people felt weakened and far away from Allah when the massive army of Pharaoh was behind them and the sea was in front of them and they were by all definitions doomed.

Imagine if Prophet Ibrahim felt weakened and far away from Allah when his own people plotted to kill him and forced him to flee his own country.

But they were all patient. Their circumstances didn’t take them away from Allah. On the contrary, this brought them closer to Him.

What happened to them forced them to rely on Allah more and connect with Him more, and this is what later granted them the major victory.

“Know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and hardship with ease.”  This is what we learned from our Prophet.

It’s important here to remember this powerful hadith that our Noble Prophet taught his young companion (and all of us):

O young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice]:

Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you.

Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you.

If you ask, then ask Allah [alone]; and if you seek help, then seek help from Allah [alone].

And know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already prescribed for you.

And if they were to gather together to harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already prescribed against you.  The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”

[…] And know that what has passed you by [and you have failed to attain] was not going to befall you, and what has befallen you was not going to pass you by.

And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and hardship with ease. (40 Hadith Nawawi)

This is it. This is the message. It is all in the Hands of Allah. Remember this very well: it is all in the Hands of Allah.

If you walk away from Allah now, who else will you go to other than Him, when the entire Kingdom of the Heavens and the Earth belongs to Him?!
