My Bad Luck: Is it Jinn Possession, Black Magic, or Fate?

30 August, 2017
Q Salaam. It feels like nothing good is happening with me lately. There are many things I wanted to happen but didn't. I feel like maybe someone I know has done black magic on me to stop any success in my life. Or maybe it's Jinn who have possessed me? Or is it just God refusing to give me success in life?

Answer

Walaykum Asalam waRahmat Allah, Dear Sister,

Thank you for sending your question to Ask About Islam and sharing your concerns with us.

May Allah enable us to help you adequately, and may you find the right answer that truly benefits you here and in the hereafter.

Don’t Obsess Over Jinn and Black Magic

Now, first of all, do NOT concern yourself at all with whether you’re “possessed” by jinn or afflicted by black magic.

Yes these things exist, but they’re extremely weak, can easily be overcome and they don’t have power over a believer who really knows Allah and knows how to seek Him properly.

As Allah says:

Indeed, over My [believing] servants there is for you no authority. And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs. (Qur’an 17: 65)

This is the promise of Allah, and He also says:

…Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak. (Qur’an 4: 76)

So really, this issue is extremely overrated and the problem is that it diverts your attention from what really matters and from the main problem you have to deal with.

What we’re going to do in this answer accordingly is discuss the main issue and remind ourselves of the cure and protection against magic/jinn that Allah has already prescribed for us.

The Main Issue: Understanding The Power of Allah

It’s very problematic when we think that other helpless creations that Allah has created could have more power than Him or could interfere in our life beyond His qadar.

So, let’s reiterate the most important point in this entire discussion: No one and nothing in this entire existence have more power than Allah!

You have to seriously and consciously grasp this fact with every ounce of your being because truly this problem won’t get resolved until you have strong and solid Tawhid and understanding of who Allah is: the All Powerful, The Overpowering.

Why are we saying that? Because Allah Almighty taught us the importance of monitoring how we think of Him as mentioned in the following hadith.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Allah said, ‘I am to my slave as he thinks of Me, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him). [Sahih Al Bukhari]

So if you think that Allah will protect you from any harm, He will. If you think other creations can interfere with your life, then this weak belief is what allows them to have any effect.

It all lies in your belief.

If your belief in Allah is strong, nothing will harm you and all evil will be removed from your way when you seek refuge in the All Powerful, The Overpowering.

This is the first and most important step towards resolving the issue you explained.

Nothing Is More Powerful Than Allah

Remember that jinn are merely creations of Allah; He can destroy them and whatever they do in a second if He wills.

Also, black magic is practiced by wicked people who seek help from jinn; again, both are helpless creations of Allah and He can destroy their plots in a second if He wills.

The issue ultimately lies in the Hands of Allah and your ultimate solution is to seek Him knowing that nothing can stand against Him.

Allah says,

Say, “Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.” And upon Allah let the believers rely. (Qur’an 9: 51)

Allah already told us in the Qur’an that jinn/devils/magic will not harm anyone except if He permitted it for a reason.

And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].” And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew. And if they had believed and feared Allah, then the reward from Allah would have been [far] better, if they only knew (Qur’an 2: 102-103)

There are ways to protect ourselves from jinn and black magic, and they are all rooted in having a healthy relationship with Allah.

Monitor Your Relationship With Allah

This is the time to reflect on your relationship with Allah and to work hard on any deficiencies there.

Check if you pray on time, and if you regularly recite the morning and evening adhkar that are extremely important as protections, if you recite Surat Al Baqarah at home often, if you’re constantly having wudu’ (purified through ablution).

There is absolutely no way one would be harmed by any Jinn if one is constantly praying on time, doing adhkar, reciting Al Baqarah and is upon wudu’ regularly.

They simply can’t overpower the Words of Allah. They only afflict us if and when we’re in ghaflah (heedlessness/negligence) of our duties and commandments of Allah.

This Life is a Test

So, Allah only allows these things to happen as a test and to have His slaves turn back to Him and rectify their life if there are shortcomings on their end.

Really this issue should not be magnified beyond its proportions, and one needs to remember the teachings of our deen in regards to what happens in our lives, like the following hadith.

Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said:

One day, I was riding behind the Prophet (ﷺ) when he said, “O boy! I will instruct you in some matters. Be watchful of Allah (Commandments of Allah), He will preserve you. Safeguard His Rights, He will be ever with you. If you beg, beg of Him Alone; and if you need assistance, supplicate to Allah Alone for help. And remember that if all the people gather to benefit you, they will not be able to benefit you except that which Allah had foreordained (for you); and if all of them gather to do harm to you, they will not be able to afflict you with anything other than that which Allah had pre-destined against you. The pens had been lifted and the ink had dried up. “[At- Tirmidhi].

So, ultimately, remember that if you fear Allah alone, He will make everything subject to you. But if you forget/neglect Allah, you will fear everything, and everything can get a chance at harming you.

I hope this answers your question, and may Allah give you peace and trust in His love for you and His power.
